It is not only Douma, but all "reconciled" areas. Russian guarantees, which were the decisive factor to convince many of those who stayed in areas covered by the “reconciliation agreements,” are now literally claiming Syrian lives through forced recruitment. 1/
As far back as July last year, we documented widespread practice in which the people who have entered “reconciliation agreements” were wanted by the military for deployment to the most dangerous frontlines in Idlib and Hama regions. 2/
Once they are recruited, they are immediately shipped to these frontlines where they often die at the hands of their former comrades or in murky circumstances away from the frontline itself. Now we are seeing this horrific practice intensify under Russian command. 3/
Forced recruitment has become a way for the regime to obliterate what it sees as anti-regime elements in "reconciled areas" standing in the way of its vision of demographically engineering an obedient population, while providing cannon fodder for the onslaught on #Idlib. 4/
Examples testifying to this method of retaliation against the people who “reconciled” are numerous and tragic. 5/ medium.com/@SACD/reconcil…
As recently as this week, several youth from Daraa, forcefully recruited into regime's forces, defected and confirmed that most of the fighters in Assad's forces who are pushed to the most dangerous frontlines are youth forcibly recruited from various "reconciliation areas". 6/ Image
Those who refuse recruitment — relying on the Russian guarantees - are being arrested, disappeared and killed by the regime’s security forces. We documented dozens of people from the northern countryside of Homs who refused to report, were detained, their fate still unknown. 7/
Outside #Idlib and other areas targeted relentlessly by Russian and Assad's onslaught, the “reconciliation agreements” areas are today among the most unsafe territories in Assad’s failed state. 8/8
