Beware: from 1 January 2021, we will be affected by a new EU rule concerning passports.

The EU will consider passports valid for 10 years from their *issue* date (even if their expiry date is further into the future). You will have to have 6+ months left.

So that means if e.g. your passport was issued on 1 July 2017 and it says that it expires on 1 April 2028 (because the UK passport authority added some remaining "bonus" time from your old passport) EU states will deem your passport expiry date as 1 July 2027.
That means you won't be able to use that passport to enter the EU after 1 January 2027 (6 months before "expiry") even though you could still use it to enter non-EU countries.

Best to check your own now, and make a note, because you may need to renew it earlier than you think!

The UK was a member of the EU (and its precursor) for 17,196 days.

For 17,196 days, we had the full might of the EU's experienced negotiating team on our side.

Nobody in our government has ever known any other way. So they are utterly unprepared for an adversarial relationship.
The EU for its part are not being vindictive or punitive or in any way unfair.

They are simply treating us as exactly what we became on 31 January: a third country, outside the EU family of member nations.

Some regrets, absolutely. But little sentimentality. Just pragmatism.
Understand that, and everything they are saying and doing makes 100% perfect sense.

Fail to grasp it, and you are guaranteed disaster.

1/3: The British government statement yesterday on the future relationship with #EU marks a significant & disturbing turning point. It’s antagonistic tone suggests a fundamental shift in national posture away from long established support for multilateralism and open trade.
2/3: UK text includes no mention of shared values & goals with other European democracies beyond “friendly cooperation”. Nor of the importance of an international rules based system... but simplistic, misleading language on recovery of “full economic & political independence”.
3/3: There’s a gulf between the narrow UK statement & the EU document setting out goals for an ambitious & comprehensive partnership. Even allowing for political posturing & negotiating tactics we should be concerned about where this is heading.

Hearing many exaggerations these days. So, here an attempt to put things into perspective: (1) yes, (s)election of new #EU leadership involves power politics in #EP & #EUCO & between them, but that's how politics & democracy function – at all levels incl. #EU – get used to it;
(2) yes, #Spitzenkandidaten process not perfect, but it is here to stay although it needs to be reformed before 2024 #EP elections (incl. introduction of #TransnationalList) – 2019 experience should provide lessons to everyone (including European & national political parties);
(3) yes, #EP increasingly runs risk of being sidelined in leadership (s)election process, but majority in Parliament can still agree on common candidate for COM-P, who has a chance to be nominated by #EUCO;

According to Transparency International @TI_EU, the lobby organisation that has held the most high-level meetings at the European Commission between 2014 and 2018 is @BusinessEurope.

1/ Although I think it's flawed I recognise Nick & Oliver put it forward in a genuine spirit of compromise and not to obfuscate the referendum

(It's depressing how other MPs less committed to Referendum are happy to trash this soft Brexit plan because they want to stop Brexit)
2/ In #January 2017, when I was first appointed at @OpenEurope, I was fan of leaving via Norway/EEA

I recall discussing it with @CER_Grant but also with many key Leavers

It would have been a sensible staging post & provided a better transition to work out our long term position

#Khashoggi Case Thread: I am going to ‘pin’ this post to use it as an ‘Info Thread’ on the #Khashoggi Case. I am in #Turkey. I’ve been following the case closely and with access to sources & experts here. This is a very ‘sensitive’ criminal case due to ‘Diplomatic Booby Traps’!!!
The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
#Turkish Intel-Investigative Bodies also have the list of all Diplomatic & Private Saudi & “other significant’ Planes in #Turkey for the period of ‘interest.’ Many of the Target airports have their own security cameras & related evidence.
