In 6th grade, I ran for student council on a lark. I had only the vaguest idea of what it meant. I then did nothing until, at an assembly, I was informed that I was to make a campaign speech.
I got up there and said that student council was probably unable to accomplish anything in terms of "issues facing the school", but that all we could ask of a person was that they try their best in any situation, and I couldn't promise any results except that I would try my best.
I lost resoundingly to the guy who promised free pizza every day. I attended that school for 3 years without any further interaction with student council or ever learning what a student councilor would be supposed to do.
To this day I do not know how one could have a platform and, like, specific positions on issues for 6th grade student council. Maybe in this more politically aware era, students are tackling actual issues in 6th grade. Great! It was not the case in my 6th grade.
I did not know then, nor do I know now, what 6th grade student council does. But I know what a winning campaign looks like. This gives me hope for Bernie, the guy promising free pizza. And even if we don't get it, we aren't being shamed into thinking wanting free pizza is wrong.
Let's start from the proposition that free pizza is good and desirable and work backward to figure out how to make it happen. This is supposedly the country of ingenuity and solutions. In conclusion, when someone says "let's get free pizza", say "yes and," not "no but". Thanks
