At least Hugh is open about trying to meddle to make the 2020 election a referendum on socialism and open primaries rather than on Donald Trump. However, tariffs + a massive farm welfare program, corporate welfare & gov't contracts awarded based on pique are not "free marketism."
You can't call things "free market" just because you like who the government is distributing the resources to (the rich & corporations 👍🏿 vs the poor, students or the nonwhite👎🏿. Here's a good primer from @RBReich on corporate welfare that makes the point: prospect.org/economy/corpor…
Donald Trump IS a redistributionist. He and his party just prefer redistributing tax income to rich people, corporations & people who tend to vote for him (farmers) to keep them on board when he hurts them with tariffs etc, and he redistributes gov't land to polluting industries.
Democrats are on a continuum in the other direction (moderates-->Warren-->Sanders) proposing to level off redistribution to the rich & corporations and direct more tax resources to the poor, the young and to everyone in the form of healthcare. And sorry that's not even socialism.
America is already a mixed economy: fundamentally capitalist w/ socialist elements (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, TANF etc) like every European nation just with less generous public commons. This "socialism vs capitalism" debate is just not real. It's about who gets the $.
