This cannot be emphasized enough as true. A couple of key points. 1) I'm willing to commit significantly less to NATO because quite simply that isn't where the battlefield of the future is, they aren't willing to commit resources, and they share 1/n theaustralian.com.au/inquirer/south… 
different view of threats and interests. 2) This is a long lasting and deep seated problem. Trump has focused attention but not institutionalized this concern. Obama just gave a yearly speech and that's it. Bush it didn't even register. Asia must become the dominant focus 2/n
3) When I say institutionalize backing out of TPP was mistake but that's crumbs from the table nothing more. I'm thinking Asian NATO/Marshall Plan for countries who sign up. Trump has taken a solid first step but it is only a first step. Another president could reverse 3/n
4) Congress and the Executive need to recognize you cannot challenge China on the cheap and very few from either party willing to accept that. Democrats just think negotiating better is the key and GOP don't want to spend the money. That's simply not how it works. Countries 4/n
in emerging Asia and Africa are starved for more positive US engagement and there is lots of low hanging fruit there. The focus has been tilted. We now need to institutionalize that focus. Done
