The @WHO daily sit rep on #covid19 is out. Numbers (as usual as of 10 am Geneva time) first:

China:
76392 (+397) cases
2348 (+109) deaths

Outside China:
1402 (+202) cases
in 28 (+2) countries
11 (+3) deaths
@WHO The two new countries here are Lebanon and Israel. It’s worth remembering that on 1 February, the @WHO already counted 23 countries outside China with #Covid19. From then until this Wednesday just two more countries found cases. Now it’s three in the last three days.
@WHO After the spike in #covid19 cases in yesterday’s sit rep in Shandong province, that is back to 2 confirmed cases today. Another sign that the spike must have come from the prison infections added retrospectively. Not sure why @drtedros mentioned the spike yesterday.

Let me pick up, where I left off yesterday: As #covid19 efforts shift from containment to mitigation, we have a window of opportunity to prepare the world. What does that mean?
There is a whole range of questions about what measures could and should be taken to slow down #SARSCoV2. I recommend this great thread by @mlipsitch to get a start on that.

@mlipsitch We will be talking about this a lot in the coming days and weeks. Every society will have to figure out what measures they deem reasonable and appropriate. But that is a discussion that needs to happen! So I wanted to focus on the point I raised yesterday about communication.

For me and for everyone I know who has been following #covid19, the last few days have felt like a profound shift in the epidemic. We are clearly entering a new phase. And since I've had some time to digest recent news, here is a short thread about that „window of opportunity“
From the start, @WHO has been very clear about its strategy: Fight #SARSCoV2 hard at its source in China and keep it from establishing a foothold elsewhere. It was always a long shot, but it was the right thing to do and it has bought the world time.
@WHO The @WHO and @drtedros have emphasized again and again that there is a “window of opportunity” to contain #COVID19. On Friday, Tedros said he believed that window of opportunity was still there, but narrowing. Personally, I think the last days have shown that time is up.

.@DrMikeRyan updating on new #COVID19 numbers now: Says China added 1,820 lab confirmed cases, bringing total to 46,550 cases. In addition, he says China reported 13,332 clinically confirmed cases in Hubei province (those "relate to a period going back over days and weeks”)
@DrMikeRyan This is the spike everyone has been talking about today. It’s due to changes of reporting, @DrMikeRyan confirms: “In Hubei province only, a trained medical professional can now classify a suspected case of #COVID19 as a clinically-confirmed case on the basis of chest imaging”.
@DrMikeRyan Outside China, there are 447 cases from 24 countries, 2 deaths (Japan in addition to the death in Singapore). Largest #COVID19 cluster outside China is the one on #PrincessDiamond with 218 cases.

#COVID-19: It’s possible to get infected a 2nd time. People recovered by their own immune system, but the meds they use are damaging their heart, and when they get it the 2nd time, the antibody makes it worse, and they die of sudden heart failure.

I don't find this unexpected. We had similar results in the study of SARS. Challenge with the virus after vaccination actually made the resulting disease worse. One theory is this may be due to an overactive immune response due to a cytokine storm.
What I find really troubling is doctors in China had to report this anonymously to avoid communist censorship. We are not getting the whole story here. Keep in mind we don't yet know how many cases this involves and we'll have to wait for more case studies in other countries.

2. Here are the official #2019nCoV numbers up till 10 a.m. Geneva time Monday. China will update early in the evening east coast North America time, so don't get too attached to the @WHO numbers. Plus they're only confirmed cases, can't reflect mild, undiagnosed cases in China.
3. Today's #2019nCoV update from @WHO has this useful (to reporters, anyway) chart that shows countries where non-travel related cases have been diagnosed. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
