Here’s a question: imagine a life form that has gotten a chance to advance 10,000 years beyond present stage of humans.

What obvious and massive signature will it leave in the universe that we should currently be scanning for in our hunt for intelligent life?
I’ll take a shot at it:

- Life creates structures in the universe that are possible but highly implausible
- For example, if you happen to land on a distant plant and you find a chair. what are the odds of concluding that it might have assembled by itself?
- So a measure of life could be a implausibility of finding something (relative to background of information generated by non-life physical processes)
Examples:

- Composition of atmospheric gases that are highly unlikely to be present in a specific combination
- Assuming such life would have been multi-planetary, similar atmospheric fingerprint in nearby spatial distances
Also intelligent life is likely a result of a diverse set of building blocks evolved over a period of time, so detecting more number of possible compounds / chemicals than what’s expected naturally could also be an indicator of life.

Now that the first case of #coronavirus has been detected in Delhi, we have announced a mandatory 3 day work from home at @wingify

This is because even people who don’t show symptoms can continue infecting other people, so it’s better to err on the side of safety.
@wingify This is a big experiment for us because there are 230+ people in the company and never before have *all* worked remotely at once.

Hopefully, the org will get to learn a lot in next 3 days and if situation worsens, lessons learned will help us be ready.
Update on this: team tells me that all remote is actually going great. Meetings are on time and there are lesser distractions.

Will try to do a detailed report card soon.

If you have an infinite supply of money, here’s how you make another infinite set of money.

Find a fair game with 50-50 odds of losing everything or doubling the money.

When you lose, double your bet. When you win, take the winnings and reset your bet to the initial stake.

This is why roulette wheels have extra slots (0 and 00) that you can’t bet on.
On that note, I am curious: do you know any fair 50-50 odds games in real life, or is that a mathematical ideal, an unachievable attractor for games that are offered in real life?

I find it amazing that most industries have to be either “under estimated” or “over estimated” to function successfully.

But for many people there’s a strong desire to get the "right" answer. Why shouldn’t that answer dictate how companies are built?

Here's a few more thoughts on economics, following up from last night's monster thread on money, infrastructure, and the going price of power.
Allow me to explain my take on Marx in a little bit more detail, in order to articulate the way he binds the descriptive (explanatory/predictive) and normative (ethical/political) elements of his theory, the consequences this has, and what's good/bad in this from my perspective.
Disclaimer: I am still in the process of really getting to grips with Marx and the tradition built around him. I am by no means ignorant, but I do not devote myself to the study of it as if it were rabbinical law or hermetic lore. As such, I will only attend to certain responses.

1/ When you buy a 10-year Treasury with a 1.5% yield-to-maturity, it should be obvious (but may not be) that you've agreed to accept just 1.5% annually over the next decade. Alternatively, a further price advance of ~15% would put the yield at zero for its remaining life.
2/ When you buy the S&P 500 at present levels, it should be obvious (but may not be) that you've agreed to accept a total return of roughly *zero* over the coming 12 years, based on measures best-correlated with subsequent long-term and full-cycle market returns.
3/ If it isn't obvious, the extremely low expected returns in the bond market are already embedded into stocks, in the form of hypervaluation and similarly dismal expected returns. Many passive investors have a 60% allocation to expected returns of 0% & a 40% allocation to 1.5%.

1/ It’s simple to note: One has to subtract before adding. Give up what’s bad, before thinking about adding what’s good. True for habits, food, news and everything else.
#life 2/ We live in a world with many apparent "signals”.

We’re consuming:
- More info/news/entertainment
- More food
- More social networking
- More things to-do/work...

…than prior generations. It’s making us lazy and critically, disengaged.
#life 3/ It’s unclear what the signal to noise ratio is - it’s a function of one’s own consumption habits.

And separately, we’re prone to setting additional goals too:
- Read good books
- Eat a healthy diet
- Have fewer but better friends
- Work smart
