If Turkey is looking to US (and NATO) for sympathy it seems they might be in for a rude awakening. Turkey has systematically snubbed the US/NATO for the past few years. So, beyond empty statements like "We stand by our NATO Ally Turkey," it does not seem much is in store for now.
So , yes, the US will "call for an immediate end to this despicable offensive by the Assad regime, Russia, and Iranian-backed forces," but will remember it was Turkey that wanted US out of Syria. It will remember it was Turkey that just months ago tested the Russian-made S-400.
True, Erdogan can get Trump on his side--however, Trump will not risk a single US soldier for this. And, well Lindsey Graham's call for a no-fly zone, that too seems far fetched. On other hand, if the US does step in, this will undermine Turkey's original plan of entering Syria.
Of course, I will need to think this over, however, my initial thought brings back to day Trump called for a US withdrawal and Turkey accepted this with open arms in order to break Kurdish control of territories and to open the area for an internationally recognized buffer zone.
Then I thought: My analysis for years was misguided by the idea that Turkey actually wanted the US there in order to give it an excuse not to enter the Syrian quagmire. Oh, was I wrong on that. Turkey entered this mess with open eyes, all the while becoming closer to Russia.
From this point my analysis however was clear: Russia has gone to the moon and back for Syria, and Putin is not about to sacrifice its alliance with it for a second. Thus, today, more or less, we see this reality come to light. A terrible tragedy that was in making for some time.
Lastly, while Erdogan might have Trump, he overall lost American popular support during last 1-2 years. Most, Americans must be thinking simply: Turkey made its own bed (not to mention most Americans are currently turned inwards to issues of Democratic primaries and Coronavirus).
