“They can be heard screaming...”

By you and by me, yes.

But not by European policy makers who choose not to listen.

What if EU politicians prioritized saving children's lives instead of letting them die to satisfy the bloodlust of the far right?

That would probably be a better world, don't you think?
“The EU has an opportunity to show it has learned from the errors of the recent past by putting in place humane and efficient measures at the border that respect the right to seek asylum and people’s dignity.” - @LotteLeicht1 @hrw
Appeasing far-right demands for “order” rather than prioritising human life and recognising human rights obligations...

The EU is praising Greek authorities' teargassing people on land & attacking people in frail boats at sea.

The highest EU officials are annoucing that they are willing to ignore abuses & violations of international law.

A vile abdication of morality.

“If the EU’s highest officials are willing to turn a blind eye to such abuses and violations of international law, they will invite more of the same.” - @hrw’s @LotteLeicht1

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights & EU Charter of Fundamental Rights recognize the right to seek asylum.

Many asylum seekers in Turkey do not have effective protection and Turkey does not meet EU criteria for a safe 3rd country to which asylum seekers can be returned.
A photo op with a simple message: the EU welcomes abuses.

Prioritising "order" over human life.

Talking about "upholding the law" while backing violations of both international & EU law.

This is yet another attempt by mainstream politicians to imitate the far right - which will, of course, only encourage more lawlessness & extremism
“The response I see today threatens to upend the entire system of protection that Europe has painstakingly built up over many decades.” - @Dunja_Mijatovic, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights

Not only have Greek authorities attacked asylum seekers on land and at sea - with loud praise from EU leaders - there are also vigilante assaults on charity workers...

If protecting human life is not the top priority, what is?
In praising the undermining of international & EU law, as well as encouraging violence against powerless people, the EU's top leaders have made one person very happy...

"Six men were hit. Three in the leg, one in the groin, one in the chest and one in the head."

"You can hear gunfire - it sounds like automatic gunfire - in the background."

Greece has an international legal obligation to respect the right to seek asylum and cannot wholesale refuse asylum applications.

Will EU leaders keep praising Greece and its flouting of the law?

Important thread from the border...

As “Europe seems to have forgotten about its own core values,” this is today’s top question.

Will we get an answer from the EU leaders who are now betraying our fundamental values?

While compassion (not to mention respect for the law) is absent at many national and EU levels, mayors of German cities offer to welcome underage refugees from Greece.

Reports of people crossing the border being detained by Greek police and then beaten, robbed and dumped on the other side.

European govts should "respect international law & ensure all asylum seekers have access to fair & effective asylum procedures. They must also stop unlawful border control practices, such as pushbacks, collective expulsions & unlawful return." - @amnesty amnesty.org/en/latest/news… Image
