QUESTION: Everyday, the President is given/offered a top secret briefing called the President’s Daily Brief, the PDB. David Priess, author, former intel officer, manager & daily intel briefer at CIA delivered the PDB while in the IC. So we asked him, what is the PDB?
ANSWER: “The President’s Daily Brief (PDB) is the US intelligence community’s daily book of Top Secret analysis of global developments, styled personally for the person occupying the presidency.
It aims 2 provide accurate, timely, and objective information from all sources to help the president defend the homeland and protect US interests abroad. The PDB began in 1964, for Lyndon Johnson, building on a personalized product created three years earlier for John Kennedy.
Every president since has received it, usually as a printed book. Obama, however, became the first president to get his PDB electronically, via a secure tablet, starting in his first term.
Intelligence analysts each day look over raw intel related to their accounts—often the political, military, or economic situation in a particular country, sometimes a specific technological or transnational issue—to see if anything warrants presidential attention.
Coordination with other analysts and honing by managers pushes many articles each day to an editing staff—for decades run by the CIA but, since 2005, run by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence—to fill the next morning’s PDB.”
