This is getting a bit overhyped. Mecca has only been consistently packed for umrah more recently thanks to modern advancements in travel

Pilgrimages have been disrupted, the mosque had been seized, the black stone has been stolen.
At one time a plague even broke out!

Al Kahina, or Dihya, was an Amazigh queen ruling over a territory in modern day Algeria. She fought against the invading Umayyad armies led by Hasan ibn al Nu’man.

Defeating him time and time again she gained a reputation of using magic and prophecy to win
With foresight she could predict the tides of the battle, birds were said to warn her of the movement of her enemies, and one time she set fire to the grass and used the wind to direct it into enemy lines.

Dealing with the evil eye has three approaches:

Preventative
Extractive
Cleansing

The peppers are extractive

The peppers draw out the evil eye as they encircle the person. A similar method is used with eggs in limpias from Latin America -
Preventative measures are about warding off the evil eye:

blue eye beads and charms
Prayers
Hand gestures
Reverse compliments
Marking the body with kohl etc
Cleansing measures use incense, baths, oils etc to purify a person or place

Most of these folk remedies likely fall into more than one approach, note how the peppers are burned after they are encircled around the victim

The evil eye is a malevolent force that disrupts, harms, and damages through gaze alone. It is a pre-Islamic concept part of the wider Mediterranean, Middle East and South Asia and still widespread today

Classically, the evil eye was described as a sort of supernatural poison directed by the eyes. It becomes incorporated into Islams and is referenced in the hadiths, likely an integration of pre-Islamic belief into the spreading religion.
Called al ayn or chesm nazar, the evil eye is said to spring from envy or malice. It can be simultaneously intentional or unintentional. Jawziyya argued that the source of the evil eye is the soul.

It is described as a piercing gaze or a hungry gaze that attempts to swallow up

These past couple of weeks I've been swamped with questions from patients and non-ID colleagues about #travel and #COVID19. Here's my take on some of these questions (from an Australian perspective), with links to credible sources.
1. Should I cancel my trip? I can't decide for you, but here are the things I'd consider:
1a. What does the Australian Government recommend? Check the overall advice level for your destination at smartraveller.gov.au/consular-servi… If the recommendation is "do not travel" or "reconsider your need to travel" you should probably cancel or postpone your trip.

First: it turns out 2020 looks a lot like 2004 after all.

2004 has always been the backdrop to this race. That was the last time Dems faced an incumbent Republican who we HATED. It creates the "electability" demand that everyone has fretted so much about.

Electability is a bit of a paradox. We can't actually know which candidate is most electable. But, also, the thing that voters *genuinely care most about* is choosing a candidate who can beat Trump.

They care more about that than policy specifics or personal traits. (3/x)

Well, I should be getting ready to do a trainer ride this evening, but I went to the @MBTA board meeting this morning, so I'm going to spend time I should be exercising writing this recap instead. There were two meetings earlier this month I did not attend for lack of interest.
This is the first meeting with a full board since the appointment of former director @spoftak to be the new MBTA general manager. Gov. Baker secretly appointed Chrystal Kornegay, executive director of MassHousing, to the board on Friday, and she was formally introduced today.
There is as yet no press release announcing her appointment on mbta.com, which seems a serious oversight. I'm not press so I don't know if any sort of statement went out on embargo. Director Kornegay did not ask any questions today so I have time to learn her name.
