Something i’m becoming much more concerned about as I talk to health experts is health system supply in the event of a pandemic. Hospitals don’t run with scores of open ICU beds. If health experts need to be regularly quarantined, there aren’t endless backups.
Then there’s the knock-on problem of people avoiding health care: Imagine an elderly patient with chest pains who decides to wait and see because they fear the ER is full of patients who could give them COVID-19.
This is pandemic 101 stuff, but everyone I talk to says we’re unprepared, and the Trump admin isn’t moving nearly fast enough to do anything about it - perhaps because preparing would signal how bad this could get, and Trump’s PR strategy has been to downplay the possible spread.
