This article was recently posted using my photo, and it reminded me of the double standards I've experienced with the press as a working class woman in the recent general election.
In the general election i was the only candidate in Broadland and probably one of very few in the UK holding down a full time job, being expected to continue my cllr responsibilities, complete university assignment deadlines and run my own campaign with every second I could give.
I signed up for that and I don't expect sympathy. But I have never been given a freeride by the press like the above story and I never will be, the fact they are painting a rich white bloke who ran in a safe tory seat as the hard working saviour of Norfolk stinks.
Add on that accompanying that story with my image, a working class woman who didn't get more than 4 hours sleep a night in the snap general, without notice or comment is lazy journalism and is just a tiny example of the double standards we are treated with.
And it gets better. The tory candidate I was initially running against was a rape apologist who was also given whole articles during the snap elected dedicated to uncritical promo. As a victim of SV & as his opponant I was not approached for fair comment, they used clipped tweets
A promo article was also printed about the rich white man lib dem candidate who had repeatedly smeared me with lies. Press coverage I received? False information about my campaign accusing me of breaking electoral rules, which after days of chasing was removed without apology.
As a white woman I'm mostly ignored, I don't experience the same vile attacks as my bame sisters & I cannot begin to imagine how exhausting that is. The press need to do a whole lot more to build up women, paying us lipservice on #InternationalWomensDay isn't going to cut it.
