This does not seem like a good plan: "Sacramento County Announces New Mitigation Efforts COVID-19" shar.es/aHbrut #COVID19 #Coronavirus - especially the plan to shift from containment to mitigation #Sacramento cc: @sacbee_news 1/n
It is one thing to say we need to do mitigation, but there is no doubt that containment & slowing progression is still important so ditching quarantine for contact at this point seems to misguided, especially due to the still limited testing #COVID19 #Coronavirus #Sacramento 2/n
Serious though - people dealing with #COVID19 #Coronavirus is there any justification for #Sacramento County to say they will be not doing any type of quarantine for people who have been exposed?
Such conflicting signal around here; we're told in dozens of PRs that few people have tested positive so we do not need to implement major mitigation strategies (e.g., closing schools) but then #Sacramento says we are so far in that only mitigation matters #COVID19
Let's suppose #Sacramento County is correct (which I think they are not) that it is time to ditch containment. That would mean it is time for aggressive mitigation strategies. Yet their mitigation plan is woefully minimalistic, almost a joke. Here I go over their plan.
1. Quarantine. No longer a need for this for people who have come into contact with an infected person. If you were exposed and get sick, then all the say is you should "stay home". Stay home a weak guideline at best.
2. Sick people should stay home (again, weak). And they should manage symptoms at home if they can (reasonable). Call docs if worse. And try to avoid 911 or ERs (also reasonable but lots more could be done to try and help convince people they are being cared for).
3. Vulnerable people should avoid crowds. Really incredibly minimalistic here since they focus on people over 80 and those with chronic conditions.
4. Workplaces. Basically - as tepid as you can get "may consider" "where appropriate and feasible"
5. Schools. Work with local entities. No guidance at all. Basically useless.
6. Masks. Save masks for health workers and the sick. This is fine.
And that is it. That is their plan. Cancel quarantine, presumably because the virus is already too widespread. But don't actually do any strong mitigation actions, which is what you need if the virus is widespread. This just seems really misguided.
Oh wait. And then, bizarrely, they end by basically saying as far as they know, the virus is not widespread. Which seemingly contradicts the whole plan.
