Here are a few excerpts from my book "Slaying Brexit Unicorns" to give you a flavour of the kind of myths it tackles...

A) Our "worthless" EU membership
(Summary: It's about much more than pounds and pence.)
B) Other countries do just find outside the EU
(Summary: They were always outside the EU.)
C) The Red Queen race for trade agreements
(Summary: The EU is changing all the time.)
D) Could the RAF step in and help with an airlift?
(Summary: yes, but not in any meaningful way.)
There's plenty more where that came from, covering sovereignty, fishing, they need us more than we need them, replacing EU trade with non-EU trade etc. etc. Also covered: the reality of no deal, and trade on WTO terms, plus the existing impacts of Brexit.

"UK interest rates cut in emergency move" Slashed from 0.75% to 0.25%.

If some/most of the difference gets passed on by banks, and you're not planning to move soon, it may be good to think about remortgaging and locking in the lower rate for longer... bbc.co.uk/news/business-…
Bigger picture, this is the big one! There's only room to cut another 0.25%, unless the base rate turns negative.

Besides, you start getting into *really* weird territory, like the banks in Denmark that offered negative interest rate mortgages...

So if this move, combined with the measures to be announced in the Budget today, doesn't stabilise the market... it's very hard to see what will.

"UK more nostalgic for empire than other ex-colonial powers" Thoroughly depressing survey. Cements notion of a significant minority of small-minded xenophobes yearning for Empire.

Education failure, mixed with dangerously rose-tinted nostalgia. Pathetic. theguardian.com/world/2020/mar…
And Brexit has made the trend worse, because it has simultaneously highlighted these trends, and "legitimised" them via the social proof of knowing many others feel the same way. It is going to take generations to scrub this blot from the national psyche, even *if* we start now!
Epitomised by Michael Portillio's Great Asian Railway Journeys programme. He went to truly fascinating places, but it was a chore to watch (I persevered because it covered so many wonderful destinations) because he kept coming back to Empire Empire Empire.

Strange how Nigel Farage isn't happy, no matter what happens...

In the past, he is on record as moaning about not being able to save steel unless we were outside the EU.

Now that we've left and British Steel has been sold to a Chinese firm, he's moaning all over again.
But then his track record is right less often than a broken clock.

See his praise for the USA's coronavirus response a few days ago. That's right, the USA, the country that has done the least of any advanced economy to try and mitigate the risks, with a laughable testing regime.
But what he was really praising was the USA's economic action in the face of the coronavirus, not its actual action action.

When it comes to the UK on the other hand, he's quite happy to berate Matt Hancock for supposedly prioritising the economy over safety.

So. The UK's negotiating mandate is out, setting terms for future UK-EU partnership....livelihoods depend on all this, so here's the crazy part - the government admits it will do the economic assessments *after* the fact - see Para 12 1/Thread
Crazy, because you'd think that the government might have "invited contributions" before emarking on this journey.

I now understand from source, there will be NO IMPACT ASSESSMENTS... /2
Which perhaps isn't that surprising, since we know from the October 2018 assessments that were forced out of the @theresa_may government, they are all negative.

This is NOT about relitigation of #Brexit. It is about taking an 'evidence-based' approach, about listening. /3

So I hate to be a #Brexit downer. But signals I am getting this morning from very well placed EU sources is much, much more cautious. Odds of a deal this week - basically zero. Odds of a deal by 31 October? "1%". Why? For all the improved atmospherics, substance is BIG problem 1/
First point. EU capitals continue to see the risk of a NEGATIVE surprise. "We should not forget that all this is viewed in No10 through the next election & unity of the party. Everything else is secondary." Officials believe that if Boris or Cummings believe it's better to 2/
change tack again, they could do that quickly. Events of the past week have shown "they don't mind breaking rules or destroying relationships if need be." So EU capitals are mindful of this. Second: while noises out of Bxl & TF50 are positive, substance remains a challenge. 3/

Much on free ports /zones over the last couple of days. The only thing you really need to know about them is that they have absolutely nothing to do with the most pressing #Brexit challenges
These remained unchanged since well before March –NI border, customs procedures, delays, business readiness etc. Free zones/ports change very little here.
The issue of whether or not EU membership has prevented us from having free ports/tax free zones is completely irrelevant (also- it hasn’t).

EU has almost given up trying to understand what’s going on in UK.
Dutch PM Rutte compares Theresa May to Monty Python knight whose limbs get cut off in a duel but insists the fight was a draw. Elsewhere in EU, mood is darker esp with the prospect of a lengthy #Brexit delay 1
With UK politics mired in confusion, only thing EU can control this week is choreography at EU leaders’ summit, starting Thurs. Donald Tusk, EU Council president is visiting capitals to try to co-ordinate single EU response if/when Theresa May asks for article 50 extension 2
Today Tusk is in Berlin and Paris – the EU superpowers. But when it comes to delaying Brexit, any one of the EU’s 27 leaders has a veto. The decision must be unanimous 3

2/ The rest of the world is left listening to Britain’s therapy session as they drone on about their ex-spouse, unable to see, admit or address their own flaws.
3/ The promise of Brexit was that it would make Britain feel big again. “Britain is special,” the Brexiteers assured British voters, who cast their ballots accordingly. But Brexit has proven that for the first time in modern history, Britain is small.

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
