Finally found time to watch the full episode of @AustralianStory featuring the fearless and inspiring @xu_xiuzhong, who always goes the extra mile to take on some of the most sensitive and challenging stories about #China.
It is unimaginable how much pressure she had to go through while exercising her rights as a journalist. So much of what she shared in the episode made me rethink a lot of the thoughts that had gone through my head in the past.
What we need to realize is for Chinese journalists like her, there is always going to be that extra level of risk and danger when they try to tell stories about China in a way that is not "approved" by #Beijing.
The Xinjiang re-education camp crisis, the rise of #China's nationalism abroad, the Hong Kong protest and the mishandling of crisis across China are all the topics that Vicky has spent extensive amount of time trying to unpack for the Australian and global audience.
Something I think we share is the sense of mission that we hope to help the world better understand #China by going beyond the filtered narrative offered by the Chinese government, and include voices from the country's most ordinary group of citizens, those who ...
... may not have the means to be heard in the world's biggest country based on the size of its population. What makes it so much harder for her than me is the fact that she is telling stories about her home, a place that now is trying to intimidate and silence her through ...
... repressive means. The level of risks that she'll be facing as she continues her mission is likely to remain the same, if not higher. But here she is, willing to take that risk once again to put her personal story in public for all of us.
So if you have the time, please do try to watch the episode, and @xu_xiuzhong, you have my deepest respect and admiration for what you have done and what you have been through. Truly an inspiration girl.
