I can't stop feeling surprised by these headlines. I really didn't think we'd be worried about plague and famine in Paris in 2020. Oh, sure, I thought about these things in a kind of intellectual-exercise way. But for real? No, I really never worried about it.
I've genuinely worried about nuclear war. I'm even more persuaded now that the risk of blundering our way into that is *far* higher than most people think.

But I never truly worried about pandemics and starvation. I figured modern societies really had that stuff down cold.
