I've just received the most extraordinary new book on #dinosaurs, a real treat for those interested in #palaeoart and for dinosaurs in pop-culture. It's in Korean! But follow this thread for images (a short video coming later too). #dinosaurbooks
Ok, I said that there would be a thread on this book. I've finally had time to look at it properly, so here we go. It's called The Cartoon Guide to the #Dinosaurs, and is by Do-Yoon Kim (and published by Hanbit Biz). My copy is signed!! So, why is it so FUN and brilliant? Well..
Kim is our guide, and the hero of this work. He's a professional comic artist, evidently has scientific training, and is obviously a big fan of natural history, science, and the history of science. The book includes numerous very amusing and informative self-portraits...
Moving on: the book includes a huge number of excellent and often beautiful depictions of #dinosaurs (and #pterosaurs). Here are just a few: The Cartoon Guide to the Dinosaurs - TCGD from here - includes HUNDREDS of illustrations... #paleoart #palaeoart
Happy to see another addition to the 'terrestrial stalking #azhdarchid eats baby sauropod' meme, initiated by @MarkWitton. And check out these fantastic feathered #theropods... #pterosaurs #dinosaurs #paleoart
Numerous scenes depict #dinosaurs in novel ways. There are references to time travel, hence appearances from the TARDIS and BTTF DeLorean.
TCGD tells several different stories about our understanding of #dinosaurs, and often recounts scientific history. So we see lots of clever and often amusing references to scientists past and present. Check out Sagan, Gould and Chuck D....
I also appreciate the references to the scientific process. Here's a reference to something that most researchers will recognise...
The science covered in TCGD is really up to date. Look: the dicraeosaurid Bajadasaurus, and a reference to @Vert_Anatomist's work on ornithischian cranial musculature... #dinosaurs
It's also obvious that Kim is very well informed on the ideas and conversations that have happened in the #paleoart world and among those interested in dinosaur behaviour and biology. Examples: the AllYesterdaysVerse, and omnivory in ceratopsians...
Several different areas of scientific research, discovery and speculation are covered in TCGD, and covered well. There's a long section on dinosaur sex - loads of great illustrations! Yes, some are graphic :) #dinosaurs #dinosaursex
This is a book for people who like pop culture, and know references, memes and modern films and so on. There's a lot of this stuff in TCGD, it's funny and fun :) Look: a Drake meme, and the pineapple-pen guy...
A lot of stuff here will be familiar to people who know graphic novels, anime and such. Witness Professor Oak from Pokemon, a General Grievous microraptorine, EVANGELION!! ....
If you know what's going on here, you've seen Avengers: Infinity War too many times...
And here's a xenomorph and another BTTF homage...
The fact that TCGD is in Korean, alas, means that some of the jokes are hard to understand. Why, for example, is @NeilShubin, with Tiktaalik, close to Zelda?
I could say a lot more. As I said, there are HUNDREDS of images here, and it's worth getting for those alone. Definitely get it if you're interested in modern trends in palaeoart, in palaeoart/popculture cross-overs and are a fan of scientific comics...
I wonder how likely it is that the book might be translated into other languages? I'm sure there'd be massive interest in an English version :) Huge thanks to Do-Yoon Kim for signing (and producing the work in the first place), and to @palaeotaku for his excellent help.
