🚨BREAKING: *preliminary* data show potential benefit of convalescent plasma containing #coronavirus antibodies (from recovered #COVID19 patients) for the treatment of critically ill patients.

Same approach was used for H1N1 and Spanish Flu.

Larger study needed to confirm.🤞🏼
Although convalescent plasma is “old school,” it has a good chance of success for #COVID19.

Convalescent plasma decreased the severity of symptoms/shortened hospital stay for #SARS; preliminary reports from #China suggest it may work for #coronavirus.😃

Convalescent plasma is collected from patients who've recovered from #COVID19 and is rich in antibodies to #coronavirus, essentially immunizing a sick patient with another person's antibodies.

More patients / data needed, but this is encouraging news.😃

Summary: 5 ICU #COVID19 patients on a ventilator stabilized and/or improved after receiving "convalescent plasma" rich with antibodies to #coronavirus (obtained from the plasma of other patients who recovered from #COVID19).

🚨Outbreak of #COVID19 in a #WA choir suggests that #coronavirus can be *transmitted via microscopic aerosols*, in addition to much larger respiratory droplets from coughs or sneezes.

Of 60 members: 2 died, 3 in hospital,45 tested positive/have symptoms.

Friends, all previous guidance was that this enveloped #coronavirus spread via respiratory droplets (secretions from your nose via cough, sneeze, touch).

Aerosols can come through normal talking (singing makes MORE), meaning it spreads MUCH more easily.

Prior guidance was based on #SARS, a close relative of this #coronavirus. Unfortunately, new #facts now suggest #COVID19 spreads more easily.

Masks likely will be needed to 1) decrease the release of aerosols, and 2) decrease exposure to aerosols.

Here’s the official @StateDept memo revealing that the US donated 17.8 TONS of crucial medical supplies, including”masks, gowns, gauze, and RESPIRATORS” in February.

Meanwhile, Gov @GavinNewsom says #California got BROKEN ventilators.🤬

As I warned way in January, do NOT believe the number of #coronavirus cases and deaths reported by #China (real numbers are FAR higher).

Instead, look at China's ACTIONS. If they had 3,292 deaths, why did they build *two 1,000-bed hospitals* in a matter of days⁉️

TREATMENT Update: New data indicates remdesivir is genuinely promising for the treatment of severe #coronavirus infection. It’s not yet approved for use anywhere so Gilead has been releasing it via compassionate use. It has already saved lives, but there’s been a sticking point:
Remdesivir causes brief liver inflammation so doctors have been instructed not to use it in patients with mild liver issues. The problem: coronavirus commonly causes liver dysfunction (called viral hepatitis). Many were disqualified from receiving remdesivir due to liver tests.
The calculus has just changed; we now believe remdesivir is good enough to use in certain critically-ill patients with liver dysfunction. Formal guidance will soon change & will greatly expand the number of patients who can receive this potentially life-saving drug. Great news!

#UPDATE: Kent Mayor Dana Ralph says “we all have a role to play” in the #COVIDー19 response, but says the county has no concrete plan. No clear safety measures. No answers on security or what #coronavirus patients will be housed at this motel.
#UPDATE: employees here had no idea King County bought the motel to isolate #coronavirus patients, even though today the county exec said it would be “operational within days.”
