U.S. coronavirus testing fell again today. Safe to say it's no longer on an upward trend, despite a rising number of cases.

This is not going to get it done, folks. We're back in the danger zone as far as testing is concerned.

California, sadly, has the biggest testing problem in the country. Part of the reason is that one of its big private test companies, Quest, simply can't seem to get the job done:

The continuing shortage of PPE also appears to be a big bottleneck (though reports still don't say exactly which PPE items are in shortest supply).

I haven't heard anything about continuing shortages of reagents, extraction kits, or swabs.

In both China and Italy, confirmed cases started to fall 2 weeks after lockdowns. But in China they fell much faster. This suggests that Italy's lockdown hasn't been as effective as China's.
Note that a lot of people are saying "China's data is fake", but they haven't thought about it very hard. In order to distort the *speed* with which cases fall, China's data tampering would have to be smoothly time-varying. Seems less likely.
I see the "China fakes its data" meme has utterly poisoned people's ability to think rationally about how to extract information from any Chinese data. Comments are a dumpster fire of I-haven't-thought-very-hard-about-this-ness.

I think on social issues (openness of borders), he's probably right. Also he didn't mention it, but I think I've read that epidemics increase support for authoritarian government. I think we're also seeing a "rally round the flag" boost for Trump.
But on economic issues, I think he's probably wrong. The economic devastation of coronavirus makes govt. assistance a necessity instead of a luxury. And the epidemic itself makes public goods a necessity instead of a luxury.

1/I've been reading a bit about historic diseases, and holy shit was smallpox scary. It was spread the same way as coronavirus but was twice as contagious or more. And it had a 30% mortality rate. That's fucking terrifying.

2/In the 1700s, smallpox killed 400,000 Europeans per year. In per capita terms that was about the same as 1 million Americans PER YEAR today.

It killed 10% of all infants in Sweden. ALL infants. Every year.
3/George Washington got smallpox when he was 19, and almost died.

Growth rate is key during a disease outbreak. The rate of growth in the the total confirmed #cases in #Canada seems to be showing signs of slowing and pulling away from the continued steep trend line seen, for example, in the United States (Green). #COVID19 #coronavirus 1/25
This is a +ve sign, but still very early to tell, esp. with an est. 1M+ #Canadians having just returned from travel, and #COVID-19 #testing only targeting >severe cases (due to rationing & backlog in lab testing), we don’t have a good grasp on the level of community spread. 2/25
The number of total cases is what we want to know, but the true number of these is not known. Not by us epidemiologists, nor by any other research, governmental or reporting institution. 3/25

The Board has recommend to the MW Grand Master “that all Masonic Craft meetings within the jurisdiction cease until 30th June 2020 or until required or necessary.”

1. All Lodge meetings are to be suspended until 30 June 2020.
2. During that period, regular reviews will be undertaken by the Board.
3. The April Grand Communication is deferred.
Please be advised that:

1. Freemasons' Hall will be closed to the general public until at least 30th June
2. Brethren may access to the building between 8am and 3pm via the eastern side door by calling duty caretaker
3. There will be no museum tours.
4.The Library is closed

First check to see if they bothered to add any variability whatsoever in the model they are using to supposedly report actual numbers from a complex system.

The mortality rate they want you to report is the - 0 day rate: Today's Confirmed Death total minus Today's Confirmed Case total.

This has not varied outside of 1/10th of 1% in the last 5 prints.

But even a minor adjustment of a few days in the mortality rate paints an entirely different picture
