BMA latest ethics advice #coronavirus

🚑 Medics could be forced to make “grave decisions”.

🚑 Decisions on rationing scarce resources eg ventilators could determine whether large numbers of patients will receive life-saving treatment or not.

huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/coronavi…
🚑🚑🚑 “Health professionals may be obliged to withdraw treatment from some patients to enable treatment of other patients with a higher survival probability,” the guidance states.
🚑🚑🚑 “This may involve withdrawing treatment from an individual who is stable or even improving but whose objective assessment indicates a worse prognosis than another patient who requires the same resource.”
🦠🦠🦠Why those ventilators matter 👇

Dr John Chisholm:

“Looking ahead, if hard choices are required, we know they will be contested. There will be anger & pain.
“People who in normal circumstances would receive strenuous treatment may instead be given palliation to favour those with greater likelihood of benefiting.

Nobody wants to make these decisions, but if resources are overwhelmed, these decisions must be made.”
1. Reminder, thanks to @Jon_Danzig

Govt purposely pursued a discredited policy of herd immunity, which lost us precious time.

2. Reminder:

Govt declined a generous offer from the EU to benefit from bulk-purchasing powers to procure millions of items of vital medical equipment, including ventilators and protective kit.

Why?
3. Reminder:

Govt purposely ignored and dismantled past plans of the past 13 years to be prepared for a devastating global pandemic, that successive (previous) governments have known about and warned about for a long time.
4. Reminder

Govt purposely pursued a discredited policy of herd immunity, which lost us precious time.

They purposely bled the NHS dry, which reduced our capacity to cope.
5. Reminder:

They purposely decided NOT to follow the advice of the World Health Organisation, whose strong guideline to test EVERYONE with symptoms is saving lives in countries such as Germany, South Korea, Taiwan... but NOT in the UK.
6. Reminder:

They purposely shunned home manufacturers of ventilators, and instead embarked on a crazy time-wasting route to get manufacturers who have never made ventilators before to invent and make them from scratch.
7. Reminder:

They purposely decided to ignore the advice of leading experts in the field, such as Professor Devi Sridhar.
The Govt is culpable. One day, there will be a public inquiry, and the purposeful, dangerous, lethal policies of our current government will have to be answered.
8. Reminder:

Yes, they did what they are doing, and not doing, ON PURPOSE. And people in Britain are, and will, needlessly die.
