Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 17

1/ The #s: @UCSFHospitals, 17 Covid+ pts, up 1 (last 2 wks below), 10 in ICU (6 on vents), mild but steady up trend (Fig) Sharper uptick at Zuckerberg SF General: 22 pts, half in ICU. But both still far cry from hardest hit areas in U.S.
2/ SF: Up to 497 cases, a bit bigger bump than yest, but wouldn’t make too much of it – smoothed avg is pretty flat (Figs).

Grim milestones today: world crossed 1M cases & 50,000 deaths. NYC up to 56K cases, 1867 deaths–deaths up ~300 from yest. Will match 9/11 deaths next wk
3/ The “San Francisco story” has gone national, such as this new piece @CNN cnn.it/2UIOBIG (I’m quoted). Hard to talk about since a) we’re not out of the woods; b) don’t want anybody to let down their guard; c) we can’t be insensitive to brutal hardships elsewhere; …
4/ ... and d) (perhaps most fraught) in the last few days (including today’s #TheDaily, which profiles different Covid responses by governors nyti.ms/2UVXo8S), the state-by-state political dimension is beginning to be amped up, weaving into the usual partisan narrative
5/ True that more blue states took early action than red ones nyti.ms/3dETXfi & Fig (from @nytimes). When threat was beyond horizon, its easy to see how those who prize individual rights over central (esp. govt) action would resist. Some still do bit.ly/3dQnTFj
6/ Big news: universal mask-wearing recommendation (promptly undercut by prez). Will be fascinating to see what % of people follow recs – it’s such a big cultural shift (vs Asia, where it’s a norm in many places). I'm particularly interested in regional differences in compliance
7) Speaking of Zoom, phenomenon of Zoombombing has hit @UCSF. How disgusting at time like this. Our provost @LowensteinMD, in big town hall today, not only called it out as intolerable but led moment of silence for people affected by the hate (pic w/ other leaders). So impressive
8/ Our dog Newman is having time of his life with us around 24/7. But life can be tough for dogs, as they're the only socially acceptable reason to take a stroll. I enjoyed this pic, sent by a friend (please excuse the language).
9/ Speaking of weekend, I'm going to take this one off, my first in a month. I’ll chime in if something huge happens – if not I’ll be back with my evening tweets on Monday night. Remember the immortal words of the Dowager Countess: bit.ly/3bHfr9E

Stay safe, please…
