Those of us who affirmed our own agency and power by learning from and with our moms. My mom’s stories are her own but she and I together have unpacked many cultural myths to learn better self compassion, willingness to identify racism, less perfectionism.
💪🏽💪🏻💪🏿 @DrvanTilburg
This is a type of trauma many WOC/POC experience. My mom’s hair is extremely thick, textured. I recall her being very fixated on making sure her own hair & our hair was always incredibly neat.

More recently I’ve come to understand this matches an experience of having black hair.
The so-called “model minority “is taught to align with white culture, to suppress oneself in order to layer under & serve white supremacy.

I have worked to remove internalized racism, colorism, self hate & learned from #blackexcellence on:…
It means giving up certain rewards & incentives that I might otherwise access if I were to serve this purpose for the system

Rewards if I validate white supremacy while offering optics of #diversity

I will not be complicit
I refuse to be this…
What I don’t give up is myself

#ethics not “optics”
#integrity not “prestige”

In #Urdu this is called “#khudi

“You don’t have to make your nest on the dome of Queen’s palace,  Oh Eagle,  you are royal, choose to reside on the peaks of mountains.”…
Not exactly this since: (am paying an ungodly amount of money for ?unnecessary)

midcareer degree at an elite institution

but do so as an investment to set myself free & be an #Entrepreneur #womaninbusiness - to not be muzzled

@timnitGebru @techreview…
What too many physicians misunderstand is that the U.S., a capitalist society, only runs businesses.

Healthcare in the U.S. is an industry, not a “profession”

As long as I am employed by somebody else I must deliver on the incentives that THEY decide…
So what is the opportunity in a capitalist society to have “khudi” and integrity?

Set myself free from having a boss

Generate new value that is so “shiny” that others want a piece of it

do well by doing good

why I just submitted to:
There is an extremely high rate of failure in #entrepreneurship, something as high as 90%

So am trying to set myself up for success in a space where the overwhelming odds are I will fail

#WomeninBusiness #womenentrepreneurs #womeninleadership…
However when I look at women like @ayshakhoury @DrOmolara @timnitGebru @oni_blackstock @uche_blackstock and so many others, if, as a WOC, especially if black, in the U.S. one begins to see & own one’s own value, be #authentic, and #ethics (not optics), will fail within systems.
Many #womeninleadership struggle with this paradigm shared here by @DrvanTilburg

If I am a good boss to others, like I strive to be, will fail to deliver to my own boss or board or whomever creates incentives - I will fail

Those “below” will “pull me down” is mindset of many
Do #womeninleadership actually make settings more equitable for early career #womeninSTEM?

Equity-minded & ethical women fail, in fact. I see exactly why this @nature article was published & do not agree with retraction

Men have the resources to mentor…
I did not know existence of the #glasscliff until after I was already flying off of it - unintentionally pushed off/pulled down by the people “below” assuming I had power & resources

My servant leader mindset: not focused on first securing my own self…
In fact, when a woman/WOC attains title or optics of power (only optics as is always conditional thus not actual power), while also often paid less, what she does earn is resentment.

Having #ethics means saying things hard to hear which causes blowback:…
What #womeninleadership conferences don’t tell you:

yes, women less willing to sacrifice #ethics for status

=unspoken selection process/gatekeeping of which women are in leadership vs not
(ethical um.. “flexibility”)

I have yet to be shown a solution…
I am increasingly outspoken about failure of white feminism

or oft quoted @BreneBrown

following her 🌈🦋🦄 ❤️ivory tower advice, if my goal is to measurable change in outcomes for black mothers & babies in #NYC

will send me flying off the glass cliff without a parachute.
It is only when I started to listen to black women like @DrOmolara @mdawriter I understood what I have been experiencing in disparities work

why #authenticity or #vulnerability advice from white feminists is wrong, harmful, & even can lead to career suicide/demise so to speak
I understand what it means to live under seige from living in a literal war zone - my dad’s job was in the Middle East - our seemingly idyllic safe home because scary overnight

THAT is the mindset I need to have when navigating my career & white spaces figuratively, or literally
By nature I am somebody who has optimistic, futuristic, positive, “visionary”, strategic traits

not a whole lot of paranoia
this causes me to fail to self protect

founders do best of paranoid & harness it

Well, 90% failure rate could do that 😂…
My choice either:

1-navigate a minefield of a large company where I don’t know where the bombs are until I step on them

(except I always lapse into trust & belief in my own agency)

2-accept 90% failure rate of #Entrepreneurship as a #womanentrepreneur & be this aware of risk:

@FBI - I have been marked as a target by alt right already - my #GOTV work is what #MarjorieTaylorGreene spreads hate on - citizen rights of minorities. The violence that smashed the skull of #OfficerSicknick on Jan 6 was about effective #votingrights work of @staceyabrams ImageImageImageImage
(Deleted tweets cuz the posted link was wrong - gah. I hate deleting tweets but the meaning totally changed.)
What I threaten is the power differential in #healthcare -by my identity & work - all bullying is about power first & foremost. Yes, I threaten bullies & their sidekicks. I open, expand, include vs paranoia to exclude, block.

Important to keep in mind that #AI is made by humans. Our flaws and biases get encoded and amplified. We need the right diversity of people at the table to design and implement #ArtificialIntelliegence and #ML. #humancentereddesign for all of humanity. #design
Who determines definitions, labels of #data cut offs? Too often we get all nerdy on which variables & factors in the model. But are we even using the right data? #tech #technology types might consider reading Maya Angelou & Toni Morrison and others to think outside the box
#AI Image
Example: many people are interested in #SDoH #socialdeterminantsofhealth & #data for it.
Who has existing large #databases?
Banks are traditionally risk averse, block/exclude those who are labeled high risk
So can their data improve health equity?…

Some outcomes are for best. I considered 2 jobs in CT in recent years. (As a kid, lived in Cheshire & Branford)

Got one offer. Other, hiring manager wanted to hire me but person to sign off heard I was “activist” so passed on my candidacy. Maybe cuz:…
We had a lovely house in Cheshire w/ a big yard & fireplace, right near my school

the realtor told us that it had been suddenly put on the market because a black family had moved in next-door

I bet when we also moved there it was seen as a negative?

I made friends quickly ImageImageImageImage
My sis, in high school, had it rough. Really rough. Girl groups make up bizarro rules to police belonging.

My sister actually saved me from stuff I did not even know she had saved me from - like the girly girl dress in the last tweet? Mom’s choice.

Not only experience, which is important, but clinical #research does not parse out the Japanese man or woman from the South Asian man or woman on heart disease risk, epidemiology, treatment.

#EBM lacking for us then

And then there is the question of who is white.

Iranian/Persian & Arabs are white on census.
Does the rest of America agree?

Racists & xenophobes tend to use loophole to say being anti-Muslim (whom they consider to all be Arab) is “not racist.”…
Proving again: race is a social construct

Not until 2020 Persians really started to call selves “POC” (for self protection)

Have lots of Persian friends
Urdu culture has Farsi roots

But let’s be honest: Persians have seen selves as superior race, apart… ImageImageImageImage

Yes, riling up Scotsmen & women, expecting them to back down, from a fight seems
SO logical
SO aligned with Scottish history & spirit

*makes popcorn*

Between this & trending #seashantytok what is not to love about our kilt wearing neighbors across the Atlantic?
On the #seashantytok #Seashantytiktok in case you were not up to speed

I would like to point out I was already following him & had watched all his videos, long before he got the 7 million views, record deal, or noticed by Kermit or Andrew Lloyd Webber

Also, if you notice a pattern of certain women who are very concerned about “cancel culture”, these are often women whose income, power, position comes from those men who avoid/fear accountability.
There is no reason to be afraid of women if one already was doing the right thing. Have good ethics yourself and have a good radar for that yourself. I have NEVER had problems with male mentors as we align on values/mission first. We work through trust.…
If you are playing a dirty game or don’t have standards to who you hire, do business with, etc (or no standards to own behavior), yeah, I get why you are paranoid.

Drain your own swamp then.
Not all women are pawns in a man’s game like:…
