Thread: 30 June 2022: Day 127 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#New_Zealand under Jacinda Ardern has not covered itself in glory over #Ukraine. The culmination of a lot of long-running trends.
U.S. Treasury Sanctions Nearly 100 Targets in Putin’s War Machine, Prohibits Russian Gold Imports home.treasury.gov/news/press-rel…
#Russia has destroyed a grain warehouse in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. This is a systematic program from the Russians, to either steal or destroy #Ukraine's agricultural produce.
A new WSJ-NORC poll finds that 89% of #Ukrainians reject a "peace" deal that leaves #Russia occupying parts of their territory. 78% approve of President Zelensky's handling of the war (and only 7% believe he has done poorly). wsj.com/articles/in-ne…
#Ukraine's President Zelensky has signed a decree to enforce the 2021 anti-oligarch law: it legally defines "oligarch" and registers them, requires state officials to declare all links to oligarchs, and bans oligarchs from financing the political system. pravda.com.ua/news/2022/06/2…
Even Abu Mariya al-Qahtani, the "dissident" jihadist in the Al-Qaeda derivative in #Syria, gets it: says #Russia is paying in #Ukraine for what it did to the Syrians, and Moscow's only weapon is its posturing with its nuclear weapons.
The #Russian-controlled enclave in Moldova, #Transistria, kinda-sorta says it will stay out of the #Ukraine war, while blaming Moldova for it potentially getting in.

Also, to have a "Supreme Soviet" (and "KGB") in 2022 ...
The messaging from @trussliz has been excellent of late. Quite right that she has interlinked #Britain's approach to #Russia's assault on #Ukraine and the policies dealing with #China and #Taiwan
#Russia claims its withdrawal from Snake Island was a "gesture of goodwill" to ensure the free flow of food supplies from #Ukraine to the world, and is wholly unrelated to the heavy Ukrainian military operations overnight
#Ukrainian soldier with a fairly blunt message to the West: "Stop being fucking pussies"
With #Russia's conscription period (April-July) nearly at an end, signs of trouble: examined areas have one-third or less of targets, and parents are securing guarantees their sons won't be sent to #Ukraine. Could be a late surge in recruits; have to see.
Sad to see, albeit a sense of inevitability to it. However senseless the historical-religious justification for #Russia's war on #Ukraine is, in the end it is the only ideological framework that makes *any* sense, and it is the one #Putin believes.
#pt: For all the (justified) criticisms of #Biden's handling of #Ukraine, credit has to be given for his understanding, and public explanation, of the ideological roots of #Russia's decision to launch this war.
New Zealand's Prime Minister with an unhinged proposal for nuclear disarmament at the #NATO summit
What a terrible loss: "Kirill Serebrennikov's Gogol Center Closed" (technically, the theatre will remain open, but run by Putin regime loyalists) themoscowtimes.com/2022/06/30/kir…
#Britain providing important training on Salisbury Plains for #Ukraine's army
There is is: rather than backing #Lithuania in enforcing the sanctions on #Kaliningrad, the #EU (with #Germany's support) is pushing for an arrangement to appease #Russia by exempting the enclave. reuters.com/world/europe/e…
#Russia pushing forward with plans to annex Kherson
#Putin's presser in Turkmenistan on 29 June: he brushed of Sweden and Finland joining #NATO as "completely different" to #Ukraine. Confirms "nothing has changed" in his war aims, i.e. the total conquest of Ukraine, even if the "tactics" have had to adjust. kremlin.ru/events/preside…
#pt: At the presser in Turkmenistan on 29 June, #Putin took a swipe at #Britain for Boris' remark about a female Russian leader not being inclined to aggression in #Ukraine by mentioning the Falklands, says that was a woman "start[ing] hostilities" for "imperial ambitions".
The yellow areas are those acquired by Empress Catherine II, which are perhaps not as impressive as Pyotr I in square miles, but did include the Crimea, a crucial strategic area long contested with the Islamic Porte, and much of what is now Ukraine.
#France displaying alarming rhetorical signs of getting serious about #Ukraine
#Russia appealing to the US state of #Texas to vote to recognise the puppet "republics" in occupied eastern #Ukraine after their vote on secession ...
Not at all fascist imagery ... Quite the euphemism for the mass-infliction of civilian casualties, too, to say that Russia has to cut out a "certain amount of healthy tissue" while it removes this Nazi tumour from Ukraine.
The figures for #China are clearly bollocks (as with every other number that emerges from the CCP), but the most disappointing is from #Turkey
#Turkey has done severe damage to relations with #Finland, and for no good reason. The Finns deliberately steered clear of dallying with the #PKK (unlike #Sweden, it must be said) to preserve the "#NATO option", which required cordial relations with all.

#OTD 1916: The first day on the Somme, a terrible bloodletting for the British and French, with 20,000 killed and 40,000 wounded. The campaign, however, nearly broke the Germans on its own, and was crucial in setting up the Allied victory two years later in the Great War. Image
The Franco-British Somme offensive in the west combined with the Russian "Brusilov Offensive" from the east. Had several other factors gone differently, e.g. the Romanians had come into the war a couple of weeks earlier, it might have shattered Germany in the summer of 1916.
The effect of the Somme-Brusilov experience in the summer of 1916 convinced Germany that nothing like that kind of land-based set-piece battle must ever happen again. Berlin switched to trying to suffocate the Allies with a naval blockade that in the end sealed its fate.

#Russia bombed a block of flats in Odesa overnight, killing at least ten civilians
Great move from #Canada. The worries about depleting Western weapons stockpiles are largely misplaced: what is happening in #Ukraine - defending Europe from #Russia - is what these weapons were acquired for in the first place.

The #Russian assault in eastern #Ukraine is making relatively slow progress at high cost, but they are able to "achieve" one thing: the devastation of Luhansk
Latest @DefenceHQ update:

- #Russia making "incremental advances" toward encircling Lysychansk

- Russia's incapacity with guided missiles makes it "a realistic possibility" they hit the Kremenchuk mall accidentally, albeit Moscow tolerates a high level of "collateral damage"

#Britain: Ahmiri Azizi, 24, an asylum seeker from Iran living in Sheffield, a supporter of #IS, has been charged with seven counts of sharing terrorist material from June-November 2021, inc. one after the Liverpool women's hospital attack in Nov. 2021. examinerlive.co.uk/news/uk-world-…
A co-defendant alongside Azizi is Mohammed Hussini, also an #IS supporter, who has also been charged with four counts of disseminating terrorist material on Telegram between August and November 2021.
Interestingly, "Azizi's defence is that his phone was hacked by or on behalf of the Iranian government. John Jones QC, defending, said that Azizi supports Kurdistan becoming an independent nation and was an opponent to Iran and IS."
