Latest @DefenceHQ update on #Russia's plans to completely conquer Donetsk Oblast in eastern #Ukraine and then stage a referendum to annex the zone to Russia.
#Ukraine fighter pilot, Anton Lystopad, recognised in 2019 as the country's top pilot and who had been awarded an Order for Courage by President Zelensky, was killed in combat against #Russia | pravda.com.ua/news/2022/08/1…
Aftermath of the HIMARS strike by #Ukraine that demolished the #Russian base, occupied by Russian troops flagged as Wagner, in Popasna, in the Luhansk Oblast.
#pt: Rumours spread after #Ukraine eliminated the #Russian base in Popasna that Yevgeny Prigozhin, "Putin's chef" who nominally runs the "Wagner" unit, was killed. Russian channels then began sharing pictures ostensibly proving Prigozhin was alive.
Bizarre framing from the Catholic Pope, saying the war in #Ukraine - which he seems to think descended from the heavens, rather than being imposed by #Russia - is distracting from the looming famine in #Somalia. reuters.com/world/ukraine-…
#Ukraine's President Zelensky has "dismissed the heads of the main departments of the State Security Service of Ukraine (#SBU) in Kyiv, Lviv, and Ternopil regions, and also appointed a new head of the SBU department in Kyiv and its region." interfax.com.ua/news/general/8…
#Russia's forces have seized 5,100 #Ukrainian orphans, and deported them to Russia, putting them in the homes of Russian parents, presumably hoping to Russify them, which is a flat breach of the Genocide Convention. euromaidanpress.com/2022/08/15/rus…
Thread on #Russia's effort to use announced "annexations" of the occupied zones in #Ukraine as a way to freeze the frontline - and politically reframe the war - as it tries to regenerate manpower before recommencing the effort to conquer Ukraine
Good signs domestically in #Ukraine: President Zelensky has been cleaning up the intelligence side, and this seems like a positive step for the judiciary.
Salman Rushdie said in 2010: "It looks very much as if Amnesty [International]'s leadership is suffering from a kind of moral bankruptcy and has lost the ability to distinguish right from wrong." thetimes.co.uk/article/salman…

"Even if Russia does annex Ukrainian territory and tries to force an operational pause, Kyiv and its Western supporters don't have to comply. Russia's overall ambitions for Ukraine [i.e. total conquest], after all, remain intact." foreignaffairs.com/ukraine/russia…
This really has been forgotten and some of the "discourse" has gotten terribly toxic. Goes partly to a fundamental issue about what "public opinion" actually *is*, i.e. how fixed/contingent it is and whether or to what extent it's even a "real" concept.
A majority of Russians, right now, in this phase of the war and with these incentives (extreme domestic repression), support the war. Doesn't seem to be mass-enthusiasm. Without coercion and after a humiliating defeat, would this hold? Maybe. But maybe not
#Ukraine's President Zelensky met today with ambassadors for @united24_gov_ua, @jksheva7 and @LievSchreiber, to discuss ways of keeping the world's attention on the Ukrainian cause after nearly six months of war to hold off #Russia's invasion.

Thread: 18 August 2022: Day 176 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Russia has had "heavy attrition" of its tanks because of a "culture of poor" work with Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) that "dates back to the First Chechen War in 1994". Failing to "enforce low-level battle discipline" of this kind has marked the war.
#pt: The Russian army, despite the so-called "modernisation", has precious little progress to show from nearly 30 years ago in Chechnya.

Latest @DefenceHQ update: notes the explosions on 16 August in Dzhankoi, home to one of two "most important Russian airfields in #Crimea" and "a key road and rail junction" supplying Russian forces in southern #Ukraine. "The cause ... is not yet clear" 😶
#Russia's state media is upset at the "repressions" of Donald Trump. In a strange segment, Vladimir Solovyov even wondered if "Teflon Don" might not be "[declared] a Russian spy" and if so would #Russia do a prisoner exchange "to bring Trump to Russia?". thedailybeast.com/russian-state-…
Thread: 16 August 2022: Day 174 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine

Thread: 13 August 2022: Day 171 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update: The "two primary road bridges" to #Russian-occupied Kherson, west of the Dnipro, are "probably out of use" for "substantial military resupply" due to #Ukraine strikes. Even if repaired, remain vulnerable. Russians relying on pontoon ferry crossing points
#Sweden considering ramping up domestic weapons production to assist #Ukraine.
Thread: 12 August 2022: Day 170 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update: Britain not saying #Ukraine attacked Saki Airbase, but says "almost certainly" five Su-24 FENCER bombers and three Su-30 jets were seriously damaged or destroyed. Airfield probably usable. #Crimea clearly not a "secure rear-area" as #Russia believed.
#Ukraine thanks #Britain for delivering on its promise of sending more M270 MLRS.
Salman Rushdie has been stabbed in New York as he was beginning a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution. Rushdie's condition is unclear. Suspicion will naturally fall on #Iran, whose government called for his murder in 1989 and never repudiated the fatwa. apnews.com/article/salman…
Pictures circulating show the Salman Rushdie being wheeled away on a stretcher after he was stabbed in New York, contrary to some reports he walked off stage, and the perpetrator being arrested.
