THREAD

How kids learn without your “feedback:”
Kids, like artists, scientists, & athletes, obsessively repeat the things that interest them –– over & over & over.
With each repetition, they create slight variations, explore the possibilities, test theories, develop skills, ideas, & instincts.
With each repetition, they develop a sense of self, a sense of voice, a sense of what they can do & who they can be.
Your feedback tells them where *you* want them to go. But that may not be where *they* need to go.
They may be working toward an aesthetic that you don’t understand. They may be seeking to reach “standards” that you don’t see.
They may have a cultural framework that you don’t understand. They may be creating meanings that you can’t “read” or respect.
They may be working on things that you find strange or trivial or baffling. They may have a sense of humor that you don’t get.
When you see a child doing the same thing over & over, looking at the same thing over & over, you may never know what they’re learning.
A child’s growing brain is the most complex thing in the universe. Each one is developing in completely unique ways.
But hey. You go ahead and make a rubric for that. You’re the experts.
