Thought experiment: let’s try to assume for the sake of argument that everyone in this story had the best and noblest of intentions. 1/
/ That means: President Trump sought the advice of John Kelly with the best of intentions, and that’s how Kelly offered it.
/ The means President Trump said what he said to the widow of SGT Johnson - repeating what Kelly recounted that GEN Dunford told him...
/ ...sincerely hoping his words would offer some small degree of consolation and express the appreciation of a grateful nation.
/ we’re still assuming everyone had the best of intentions here — the words were not heard by the Gold Star family the way intended.
/ Rep Wilson in this narrative was thus advocating for the family and discussing what she saw as insensitivity.
/ John Kelly, believing in the president’s noblest intentions, then tries to explain his P.O.V. and describe the pain of Gold Star Families
/ (At this point, btw, even if we’re currently believing in everyone’s best intentions, neither WH nor Wilson are doing so.)
/ At the end of all this we’re left with one uncomfortable Fact: the phone call went wrong & the family of SGT Johnson is in MORE pain.
/ To me, beyond all the politics, that seems to me to be something the White House would want to fix. Because it’s not what POTUS wanted.
/ This has been today’s thought experiment in trying to not automatically believe the worst in everyone. ###
