1. Speaking of JFK's assassination, it's worth revisiting story of Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee & his sister-in-law Mary Pinchot Meyer
2. Ben Bradlee's sister-in-law was Mary Pinchot Meyer, who was married to CIA bigwig Cord Meyer. She was also JFK's mistress.
3. Mary Pinchot Meyer was killed, apparently in a mugging, on October 12, 1964, slightly less than a year after Kennedy's assassination.
4. When he heard his sister-in-law was killed, Ben Bradlee went to her Georgetown house to find her diary, suspecting it was explosive.
5. Bradlee went to the house. Door was locked. He had key. Inside was James Jesus Angleton, head of CIA counterintelligence.
6. Bradlee's own account: "We didn't start looking until the next morning, when Toni and I walked around the corner a few blocks..."
7. "...to Mary's house. It was locked, as we had expected, but when we got inside, we found James Angleton...
8. "...and to our complete surprise he told us he, too, was looking for Mary's diary."
9. Angleton told Ben & Toni Bradlee that he didn't find the diary. No diary has ever been found. Mary Meyer was known to keep a diary.
10. The interesting thing about James Jesus Angleton is that he had been paying attention to Oswald since 1959, when Oswald defected to USSR
11. Seven days before Kennedy died, Angleton's staff received word that Oswald was in Dallas: thedailybeast.com/cia-spyhunters…
12. The great @jeffersonmorley tracked Angleton's interest in Oswald in his book The Ghost & here: thedailybeast.com/cia-spyhunters…
13. Angleton made a systematic effort to obfuscate or destroy evidence of CIA knowledge of Oswald pre-assassination.
14. What's the best case scenario here? Angelton was following Oswald, embarrassed he didn't stop assassination & wanted to cover up.
15. Okay, here's the kicker: among the documents NOT released today, transcript of testimony from J.J. Angelton:
16. I imagine Angleton's testimony to the Church Commission went a lot like this:
17. Correction to #9: fate of Mary Meyer's diary uncertain. There are conflicting stories of possession & destruction
