@NewYorker The author visited SenseTime, a facial recognition startup in China that won ImageNet 2016. In Xi Jinping’s China, where social order is valued over the rights of the individual, there are few debates about data privacy and policing. ML is casually deployed to stop petty crimes. 
@NewYorker In Shenzhen, face recognition is used to deter jaywalkers. At busy intersections, offenders' names, ID are posted on a roadside screen. In Beijing, face recognition is used in public toilets to stop people from stealing toilet paper; it limits users to 60cm within a 90min period.
China is only starting to scratch the surface of a data-driven technocracy. The large paradigm shift will happen after the implementation of their Social Credit System, where daily activities will be subject to reward functions on a scale not seen before.
