1) The cloture vote. The obstacle that currently stands in the way of the MAGA agenda, the functioning of government, the ability to pass a long-term budget much less keep the government OPEN. What exactly is the cloture vote?
2) Well, 2 answers. The 'correct' answer is that it is the vote to end debate in the Senate so that an actual vote can take place, and that vote only actually requires a simple majority.
3) The bourbon drunk Kyle answer? It is the tool that the Democrats have used for a century to buttfuck the United States and ensure their racist destructive policies can't be undone at the federal level.
4) Democrats from after WW1 all the way through the Civil Rights era had used the Cloture vote as a barrier to prevent civil rights laws from being passed at the federal level. That's right. Democrats spent DECADES denying blacks their civil rights with the filibuster.
5) Before 1975 the Cloture vote required a 2/3 majority of all Senators present. This was an exceedingly high bar to pass. So the fuck happened in 1975?
6) In 1974, Watergate happened, and Democrats got to 61 seats in the Senate starting in 1975. As a result, they then lowered the Cloture requirement to a strict 60 votes no matter what. Yep. The 60 vote requirement is a Democrat rule.
7) As a result of this rule change, the Democrats were able to avoid Cloture issues for the most part during the destructive as hell Jimmy Carter years, eventually losing their supermajority in special elections.
8) Had they only had a 55 or a 51 seat majority you can fucking guarantee that they would have lowered it to those thresholds or eliminated it entirely. How do we know this? Because look what happened in the Obama years with judicial nominations. Eliminated the 60 vote Cloture.
9) Cloture was abused by Democrats to deny blacks their civil rights for decades. Then they lowered it so they wouldn't be stymied in turn before removing it for specific votes as required. Now they're using it to put non-Americans before our military and children and others.
10) @SenateMajLdr, the Democrats do not respect the purpose of cloture. It has and always will be a tool they see themselves as the sole owners of to destroy the United States. No hyperbole. This isnt a disagreement within Congress like last shutdown. This is a hostage situation.
11) That so much has been accomplished despite the cloture vote is a testament to the Republicans in the Senate. But this is a step too far. This will happen again next year, the year after, the year after that. Kill cloture. Pass an actual long-term budget. Win.
