/ Many prominent Leavers are now advocating a Hard Brexit. As recent discoveries of old tweets have emerged, many of them used to be happy with soft Brexit alternatives. Some leavers maintained *any* Brexit was Brexit.
/ Now they say unless we are out of not only the EU but also EFTA, the European Economic Area and Customs Union, ECJ, CET, EUROPOL, Euratom etc then it isn't "Real Brexit"
/ Where has all this come from? We think a lot of the Hardline Brexiteers know that a 'clean' (as they describe it) Brexit will damage EU-UK trade. They don't want to be held responsible; so they want a "big win" USA-UK trade deal to capture headlines and fill the gap.
/ the only problems are: trade deals take time, Trump is protectionist [see: America First, his wanting to renegotiate NAFTA] and finally that a FTA with the USA probably won't make up for the damage done to EU-UK trade.
/ so knowing this, Brexiteers are left with two alternatives - either adopt a position similar to ourselves - open to global trade but maintain close trade links to the EU or... Gamble the house on a mega deal with the USA to the exclusion of everything else.
/ in order to sign such a 'mega deal' with the USA, they know the Americans will have substantial demands: theguardian.com/business/2017/…
/ Even if the UK was able to sign such a deal with the USA, it would have many negative impacts on eu-uk trade. Since our regulatory system would diverge from the EU's our goods would face barriers to entry like US goods currently do.
/ we would face the same problems trading with the EU that the USA does: efta4uk.eu/wto-is-not-the…
/ the UK can't sign favourable 'sweetheart' deals with both USA and EU. Choices need to be made. Since the European Union is on our doorstep and we are already aligned with them it makes sense to stick close to them.
/ Q: so why might Brexiteers still pursue such a risky strategy? A: Because through their media allies they control the narrative.
/ If UK fails to sign a deal with USA it can be blamed on Trump's protectionism not the UK Government. However, if UK does sign a deal with USA it will be taken as 'evidence' that the global Britain strategy is working.
/ Conversely if the EU was to sign a great deal with the UK, that would be a sign that project fear was wrong all along, and if the EU doesn't give us a special deal the media puppets will repeat the line that the eu are "punishing" the UK.
/ Those who have most influence in the media controls the national narrative, irregardless of the facts.
/ so in summation m'lud, the Hard Brexit strategy of abandoning all European structures, arrangements and regulations in order to sell the family silver in a trade deal with the USA is very, very risky with not much potential upsides.
/ it is like a vegetarian cafe deciding to put burgers and bacon on the menu to appeal to the meat eating family that live nearby, in the hopes that their regular clientele don't mind.
/ for our Brexit suggestions read this: efta4uk.eu/into-the-brexi…
/ and if you are wondering how the UK ended up following this dangerous brexit strategy, this funny but crude cartoon we found on the internet probably has a lot of truth to it: /end
