Worth stepping back to think about where America is now. The WH occupied by a man who lost the popular vote and probably wouldn't have won the electoral vote without support from a hostile foreign power; this man is in clear violation of his oath of office 1/
But he can't be held accountable because one entire political party doesn't care about any of this as long as it gets to cut taxes on the wealthy. And this party may retain its hold in the next election even if it loses the popular vote by 7-8% 2/
Because a twisted, gerrymandered system effectively disenfranchises tens of millions of Americas. Isn't it great living in the world's greatest democracy? 3/

I'm trying not to do straight political punditry on the shutdown, because I don't know anything that any observant reader doesn't. But here's what strikes me: the thing with the wall isn't just cynical, it appears to be politically obtuse 1/
Obviously the wall serves no policy purpose, it's just an attempt to rile white people up over the imaginary threat from brown people. But here's the thing: Republicans have been trying that trick repeatedly, and it keeps not working 2/
It didn't work in the 2017 VA governor's race, which the GOP tried to make all about MS-13. A lot of pundits assumed this would work; they lost by 10 points 3/

Good piece from Bloomberg pointing out that Sweden actually has a top marginal rate of almost 70% -- and grass is hardly growing in the streets 1/ bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
I'd also point out that while the US federal top rate is only 37 -- it was 39.6 before the TCJA -- there are also state and local taxes. If you're a high earner in New York City, you pay almost 9% state and almost 4% city tax at the margin 2/
Plus sales taxes -- 4.5% state and 4% city -- also reduce the purchasing power of a marginal dollar earned. Put all of this together and high earned-income individuals (as opposed to capital incomes) pay a marginal rate of 55-60% 3/

I’m not saying looking at @FiveThirtyEight’s model and charts and stuff isn’t cool, because it is and provides some insight. But no matter what the numbers say, it’s most certainly NEVER an excuse to not #Vote because you feel your peeps are a “lock”
Need nothing further than to point to 2016. Which by the way, @FiveThirtyEight didn’t really have wrong, but the “selected not elected” mindset existed before 2016. Why else would over 100 million people choose NOT to participate in their civic duty to choose their leaders.

Two things can be simultaneously true: 1) The vast majority of Trump voters will stand by him no matter what. 2) A man who lost the popular vote and only squeaked by in a couple swing states because of an October Comey email surprise is vulnerable at the margins.
I’m a little unclear why people feel you have to decide between these two narratives. A very small number of people who voted for Trump can be talked out of doing it again. But a small number is all that is needed.
Honestly, I'm starting to worry that Trump's two-year campaign to bamboozle people into believing his victory was decisive instead of a fluke has been effective, not just on the right, but also on the left.

This is why I support revolution. I agree w/ tenets of the first American revolution that called for the end of kingship & the creation of representative democracy. I support a 2nd revolution to do what founders never did-- end slavery & ensure human rights, voting rights 4 all
There are many in power (primarily in GOP) who genuinely do not believe in the idea of democracy, voting rights or human rights. They need to be purged from positions of power & replaced w/ leaders who understand we need institutional change to ensure human rights & democracy

I've been thinking of all the Republican president there have been in my lifetime. I was born in 1956. The first Republican president I knew was Eisenhower. He was the last reasonable Republican president.

He was the last -legitimate- Republican president.

Ike was a moderate and a genuine hero. He warned us against the military industrial complex. He didn't suck.

Richard Nixon was a crook, and he was elected in 1968 by conspiring with a foreign government to blow up peace talks to make Democrats look bad.

Nixon was reelected in 1972 by hiring a team of dirty tricks operators (they called what they did "rat fucking"), which included bugging the Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel.
