1/ The first online political campaigns made simple websites, ran some banner ads, sent some eNews updates.

This looked a lot like the internet at the time.
2/ The next campaigns built grassroots efforts, using data to bring people together at scale and distance and suggested a shift towards a different type of power, held by people.

This looked a lot like the internet at the time.
3/ Today's campaigns channel data and money through unaccountable networks to reach the voters they want to, tapping into weaknesses of human psychology and the inattention and inability of institutions to adapt to a changing world.

This looks a lot like the internet today.
4/ The future of the internet is walled gardens of machine learning, AI, self-optimising algorithms, deep personalisation, infinite computing power and connectivity all built off our data.
