Sure. Not too complex. Thread ->
.NET is a family.
* Core runs on containers, many Linuxes, Windows and Mac. OSS, moves fast.
* Framework powers Windows itself, desktop apps. Moves slow. Conservative.
* Mono powers iPhone, Android, clean Portable C code.
.NET Standard is a versioned API spec like Android’s API levels. So if I write a library that is “.NET Standard 2” I know it can run anywhere. Cloud, watch, phone, Raspberry Pi. Anywhere.
Your comment here is dismissive of a lot of work. There’s no “just” and it’s not “pointless.”
Suddenly millions and millions of C#, F#, and VB developers who learned on desktop Windows can write container apps, phone apps, web apps, watch apps, arm32 apps, freaking Wii and Switch apps. Unity is .NET. We have ML for .NET. A massive OSS door has opened.
Something like 70-80% of libraries and apps are Standard compliant. I personally have taken two 12-15 year old apps and moved them to Linux in a weekend. Web apps to containers, etc.
