THIS is a #HatchAct violation. Just FYI.
THIS is a Hatch Act violation. For those keeping track.
And in case you were wondering, KellyannePolls going on tv and saying to buy Ivanka’s clothes FROM THE WHITE HOUSE was most certainly a Hatch Act Violation.

New: WH advisor Peter Navarro violated the Hatch Act according to the Office of Special Counsel; his attacks on @JoeBiden are cited, including his calling the PEOTUS "Beijing Biden" ⬇️
@CourthouseNews
h/t @JackRodgersCNS who you should be following if not doing so already.
You may recall when Kellyanne Conway was found in violation of the Hatch Act last year, President Trump brushed the report aside saying it sounded like her free speech was being violated (It was not). Safe to say we can expect a redux with Navarro.

1. Campaign rally flop

Invited 2,000

“About 400 or so here” - @JenniferJJacobs

Even Fox News agrees (with a little rounding up?): “about 500” showed up.

2. Covid precaution flop

Looks like they’re packing people closer together for a better photo image.
2. Fox News host:

“They were wearing masks but they were definitely kind of sandwiched in together.”
3. And in terms of the #HatchAct violation:

“This will be a campaign speech. ... No doubt about it. This is the same kind of remark that he would be giving if he were doing this in front of a large audience at a MAGA rally.”

Fox News’ @markpmeredith (correctly describing event)

🙏 @ShreyaTrivediMD! Fascinating questions. My answers:
1. #Hesitations - Two things...
A. Already distracted by phone (email, texts, etc.). Will Twitter make it worse? Answer, yes. However, I try to limit my interactions to specific times, and turn off notifications.
B. I work for the Federal Gov. Outspoken for #Equity #Inclusion #HumanRights #HeForShe #BLM #LGBTQIA.

I worried about violations of #HatchAct.

However, can speak about issues, just not parties or candidates.

However, #45 doesn't care about Hatch Act. Should I?
2. My most meaningful collaboration in my career has come via #MedTwitter. @JenniferSpicer4 and I noticed similar ideas and content from each other, then set up 1 meeting, and @MedEdTwagTeam was born. We have never met in person, but have collaborated weekly for months now!

For those of us who study autocracies, including elections in autocracies, there were a lot of familiar messages, symbols, and methods on display this week at the #RNCConvention. THREAD
1. Cult of the Personality. This show was all about Trump. ( 3 years after the death of Stalin, Khrushchev's gave his secret speech in 1956, titled "On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences." I wonder if a future GOP leader will give a similar speech someday?)
2. Administrative resources. Autocrats and semi-autocrats frequently use government resources for personal electoral gain. We have #HatchAct to prevent such behavior in the U.S. It's obviously not working.

When I walked into the Old Executive Office Building at the White House complex to meet my new staff at my NSC office on January 21, 2009, every single one of my team had worked for Bush the previous day. & we all got to work to advance AMERICAN national interests. THREAD 1/
That's why the #HatchAct is important. And that's why the appearance of General Kellogg tonight and Pompeo last night violated not just laws, but virtuous norms of isolating nationals security from partisan politics. 2/
The overwhelming majority of those that work at the State Department and NSC are non-partisan professionals, not political appointees. When their bosses show up at a Party convention, their common quest to defense AMERICAN national interests is undermined. 3/ END THREAD.

Thread: So get a load of this -- I decided to take the six Obama cabinet members @jimgeraghty tweeted out photos of having spoken at the 2012 DNC and feed their names in a Nexis search for the network morning and evening and Sunday shows (ABC, CBS, and NBC).
Some had fairly uncommon last names (e.g. Vilsack), but others had common names (e.g. Arne Duncan), so I did their first and last names and spanned the week of the DNC. I used a full eight days so as to catch anything from Sunday, September 9 that might have had a recap.
My results? Two results (and one duplicate). Both were for then-HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. One was a Romney adviser mentioning her on @ThisWeekABC in a debate on welfare reform and the other from @NBCNightlyNews playing a clip of her speech talking about Medicare.

#Pompeo ought to consult his attorney before speaking at the #RepublicanNationalConvention

@POGOBlog obtained internal @StateDept memorandum spelling out #HatchAct and dept policies.

Look how crystal clear the legal memo is.👇

@schwellenbach's analysis: pogo.org/investigation/…
2. Multiple lawyers like this👇signing off on Pompeo's speaking at RNC is not an indication of lawfulness. It's more an indication he recognizes the need to get legal cover.

Question to ask: Which lawyers actually signed off? The political appointees?
3. Link to the full Department of State legal memo of December 3, 2019, which states in bold print for emphasis:

"Senate confirmed Presidential appointees may not even attend a political party convention or convention-related event"

1/ The #KellyanneConway issue.
As everybody else, I read a version of this: "Office of Special Counsel => recommends removal => Kellyane Conway ("Counselor to the President")

politico.com/story/2019/06/…
2/ So, like a well-behaved #BaffledImmigrant, I decided to learn something about the #HatchAct . You know, it might come in handy during a civics test that we, aliens, must take. Here's what I found:
fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R…
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatch_Act…
3/ The #WhiteHouse responded in outrage, suggesting that the Counsel was out of line, dangerously risking the country's free speech and suggesting that the Special Counsel was the one actually infringing the Hatch Act. So let's see. Oh, yes, this is going to be a mess:

Great. Our own Secretary of State (in charge of elections) is a Feinstein fan. We’re doomed.
Doesn’t the #HatchAct come in to play here?!
Hello @CAGovOps @CAgovernment why is @AlexPadilla4CA endorsing candidates on his official account? Assuming you’ll just ignore this because our local government is so wildly corrupt but it never hurts to ask.
