It is not just an assault on human beings, it is a complete assault on all sentient beings & nature—humans, animals (livestock, birds, insects, marine life, pets, poultry, cattle, wild animals), crops, water, air, soil.

#Diseasecontrol strategies originate through endorsements by Governments/academia/authorities; they're often not field-tested robustly; even when they are, evidence is limited to one sector (cf. #OneHealth #Intersectoral approaches);
#publichealth approaches ought to be contextual & their effectiveness ought to be evaluated, yet strategies for disease control often spread through word of mouth and are sometimes untested;

The cuts to @UKRI_News #GCRF are disastrous. While the gov't is not wrong that the UK will still be a significant source of aid funds, the cuts to research threaten to undo so much of what has been accomplished in the past 5 years and leave the UK worse off. 1/
Since 2016, @UofGlasgow has used our annual allocation of @GCRF from the @ScotFundCouncil to run our GCRF Small Grants Fund. We've funded 184 unique initiatives in 306 partners across 54 countries. 49% of those were led by female PIs, 39% by our early career researchers. 2/
Now those partnerships, those networks, those early career links are in danger. The ability of our UK researchers to develop forward-looking, globally relevant researcher agendas is under threat. And we will pay the price. Just look at what these funds have been used for...3/

Five years ago today, USFWS banned 201 species of #salamanders from entering the US to prevent a #chytrid extinction crisis (see here: fws.gov/injuriouswildl…) Unfortunately #frogs can also carry this pathogen & their door remains wide open: nationalgeographic.com/animals/2020/0… #WildlifeTrade
As a freelance #WildlifeTrade scientist, my work integrates #science & policy to help reduce potential harm trade may cause. The example above shows the dangers that occur when government laws & policies don't keep up with scientific progress (2/N) @NatGeo #nature #OneHealth Image
After @USFWS enacted the 2016 #WildlifeTrade restriction to help keep this deadly fungus out of the US, it was found that frogs can also carry this "#salamander" pathogen. Thus #frogs might be carrying 2 species of #chytrid into the US (see brill.com/view/journals/…) #SciComm (3/N) Image

IMPORTANT REMINDER! If you ever see a sick or dead #salamander please snap a photo & add it to my disease surveillance page on @inaturalist at inaturalist.org/projects/savin… A novel #chytrid fungus is attacking #salamanders & you can help! #CitizenScience #CommunityScience #salamanders
Just realized I hashtagged salamanders 50 times in the post above. Sorry! Chytrid fungus gets me all fired up!
And just to be clear, the photos you upload do NOT necessarily mean that the animals had #chytrid fungus. Lots of things cause amphibians to die. But we have *so* little info about what a "normal" amount of dead #salamanders looks like. Your records have sparked field responses!

'Future-proofing Africa’s livestock sector policies: lessons from African countries and the Covid-19 pandemic'

At a Malabo-Montpellier Panel Webinar

Wright reminds us that access to 'high-quality diets' is very difficult for poor people.
Women often control household diets—and raising and selling livestock and livestock products helps them to enhance their family's diets.

This is what I want people to understand about the #WildlifeTrade and spread of diseases, from my personal experiences. We need to start fixing this *now*, before the next #wildlife or human pandemic: nationalgeographic.com/animals/2020/0… via @NatGeo #ScienceTwitter #SciComm #OneHealth Image
The reason I'm so passionate about this #WildlifeTrade issue is b/c I truly believe solutions already exist but the tools are spread across different agencies. What can be done? I'd love to help build a collaboration between @CDCgov, @USFWS, & @USDA as a place to start #OneHealth

Majority of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic—they jump from wildlife to people. Key to addressing this: our interactions, exploitation, and destruction of nature.

NOW: Christian Walzer of @WcsHealth will be speaking at #NatureForLife Hub. Watch live on our Facebook. Image
At WCS, our policy recommends stopping all commercial trade in wildlife for human consumption (particularly of birds and mammals) and closing all such markets.

Also: we have to acknowledge that outbreaks are inevitable as the interfaces between wildlife and humans increase, primarily due to deforestation and agricultural expansion, as WCS's Christian Walzer wrote in @FrontiersIn yesterday. doi.org/10.3389/fvets.… #NatureForLife Image
