The eruption is over but the ground is still shaking - there have been dozens of #earthquakes around the #HungaTonga #volcano (magnitude 4.5-5), continuing today. 1/3

#GoogleEarth #Tonga #earthquake
Many are likely due to slip on existing faults or fracturing of new ones due to changes in crustal stress caused by the eruption. Others may be linked to magma movement, although that usually produces a more persistent signal called #volcanictremor. 2/3…
I haven't seen any focal mechanisms for these events, which would tell us more about the type of #earthquake - it may be difficult to extract that information as these events are M5 or less, and seismic networks are sparse in this region. 3/3

Kanokupolu #Tonga taken yesterday, 1/16/22 via Airbus SPOT #satellite. Post volcano/tsunami. High resolution image, this looks to me to be ashfall.
#Tonga taken by Airbus SPOT on 1/16/22. This is (was?) Ha'atafu Beach and Haatafu Beach Resort, but it seems to me that there are structures missing on this side (the resort appears to me to be missing, or extremely covered with ash). Possible tsunami scouring on the beach.
Reference image in Google vs. this acquisition -- you can see the big building on the top right in both images, but none of the structures you'd expect at Ha'atafu Beach, Nuku'alofa itself. #tonga #tsunami #volcano

Tonga Navy appears to have just reached the island of #Nomuka
This ship (the only one transmitting satellite AIS data) came from Nuku'afola this morning, when officials said they would be sending the Tonga Navy to the outer islands.
Found this video I had missed earlier from this location (FB Live... shot just as the seas were retreating. Hope this person made it up a hill, what was coming as likely worse)

Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai #volcano before/after the eruption. Sentinel-1 satellite (-20.48838, -175.28037)
Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai #volcano on the left, you can see the interference patterns on the waves from the tsunami impacts (another volcano on the right). The gob of stuff in the middle was not there before, maybe floating tephra or something else radar reflective.
No tracking details on these ships (premium satellite data) but there are a few fishing boats that got one heck of a wakeup call earlier. There's a few that were VERY close to the volcano. (60 miles away on open ocean).

A #volcano just erupted near #Tonga - but why was it there in the first place?

Tonga sits on top of the #TongaKermadec #subductionzone, where the #PacificPlate sinks below the #AustralianPlate.

The subducting #PacificPlate carries the culprit into the mantle: #water. 🧵1/3 Source: https://source.wust...
Some people think that volcanoes at subduction zones are due to frictional heating from the two plates rubbing against each other - NO!

In this case, melting is because of the addition of water, sort of like how adding salt can make ice melt. 2/3

Is this the only volcano in the region? Absolutely not. Volcanoes parallel the plate boundary, a string of conical mountains 2000 m high, occasionally poking above the sea. Usually quiet, but built over millions of years through thousands of eruptions. 3/3

A major volcanic eruption resulted in a #tsunami offshore #Tonga, reports from there are scarce, but I tried to estimate the tsunami pattern due to the potential dome collapse of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai #volcano
The simulation estimates the tsunami triggering via a sliding mass of up to 2 km³ volume. It might be an overestimation, but data is still coming in.
First eye witness reports/videos from Tonga already indicate major inundation for #Tonga Image
We have reports of waves +/- 0.5 - 1.5m from Samoa, Fiji, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, even Australia and many more places.

Currently working on a simulation for the farfield effects. But calculation takes a while.

If this were true, don't u think it would be a much bigger story? 🤔
Still, worth a share... Just in case.

EAST COAST PAY ATTENTION #VOLCANO 🌋🌋🌋🌋Locals on LaPalma have uploaded a photograph which they say shows "Detachment."   Part of the land which is FEARED to slide into
the Atlantic Ocean and cause a Tsunami to the east coast of the United States, appears to have begun to DETACH at its top. There is a very clear tear in the forest atop the mountain showing bare earth along the uppermost ridge there the trees on the land have torn away from each
other.  If this photo shows what the locals claim, then the landslide could happen today
Those on the U.S. east coast must pay extra close attention to this today.  Events are taking place at a greatly increased speed.
If the entire chunk of land (the size of Manhattan, NYC)

Spectacular Neon Blue Lava Pours From Indonesia's Kawah Ijen #Volcano At Night
Heard of "red hot" and "white hot" to describe searing temperatures. But what about "blue hot"?

That's hue of Indonesia's Kawah Ijen Volcano, glows with an otherworldly "blue lava" at night. Image
The mountain contains large amounts of pure sulfur, which emits an icy violet color as it burns, turning the rocky slopes into a hot (at least 239 degrees Fahrenheit), highly toxic environment. ImageImage
Despite the dangers, photographer Olivier Grunewald captured the scene, along with a group of men who toil on the volcano at night, battling noxious gases to mine sulfur from the crater and carry it out by hand. Image

An #eruption of #Nyiragongo #volcano (#DRC) began in the evening of May 22. #Meteosat satellite data (from @CIRA_CSU) show a strong thermal anomaly appearing at 17:15 UTC, and a small #volcanic plume amidst widespread regional convection. Follow @CharlesBalagizi for updates.

#Sentinel5P #Tropomi data on May 23 show SO₂ emissions from the #Nyiragongo #eruption. SO₂ to the SE over #Tanzania is at higher altitude (perhaps to tropopause level) and was emitted during the initial, more energetic phase of the eruption (17:00 UTC, May 22). @VirungaSupersit Image
