Dear friends, #Congress (#INC) likes to claim that it "fought" for #India's independence & refers to its political opponents as #fascists. How many of you know that only did #INC *not* EXCLUSIVELY "fight" for #Independence (AND #Gandhi was "happy" to settle for #DominionStatus)+
But also the party known as #INC by #IndiraGandhi was *not* even the same party that was formed in #1885 ? A thread about the #Congress follows: +
In 1883, retired civil servant (AO #Hume), a #Scottish ornithologist. Hume first expressed the idea that "educated" #Indians should fight for greater freedom and representation for themselves in the #British government of #India, claiming it as both the Indians' right and duty +

Latest analysis for #Starlink & #OneWeb shows these two constellations accounted for 42% of all close approaches within 5 km predicted by #SOCRATES at the end of August, with Starlink alone accounting for 29%. [1/n]
On average, #SOCRATES predicts that each #Starlink satellite will now experience 1 close approach within 5 km with a non-Starlink object every day, and each #OneWeb satellite will experience 3.4 close approaches with a non-OneWeb object every day. These rates are increasing [2/n]
Here's the same data from [2/n] plotted with respect to the number of satellites in each constellation in orbit, clearly showing #SOCRATES predicts that #OneWeb satellites experience more close approaches (within 5 km) per satellite than the #Starlink satellites [3/n]

Philosophy is a love of wisdom, which cannot be quantified by grading rubrics or systematized by learning outcomes. Why are philosophy professors addicted to academic metrics that commodify learning? (A thread on #ungrading).
@Jessifer says that "grades (and institutional rankings) are currency for a capitalist system that reduces teaching and learning to a mere transaction. Grading is a massive co-ordinated effort to take humans out of the educational process"...
@Jessifer also says that learning outcomes presuppose what is to be determined in the course of collaborative inquiry, & should be replaced by "emergent outcomes" that "are co-created by teachers and students and revised on the fly"...

A follow-on from yesterday's thread with a note about averages. In a #SOCRATES report from 30 June 2022 the average collision probability for each #Starlink conjunction was 3.7E-6 but the range of values can be broad (chart shows data since 2019) [1/n]
Chart showing frequency of conjunctions at different collisi
#SOCRATES predicted some events with a collision probability > 1E-2 (1-in-100) & some with a probability < 1E-7 (1-in-10,000,000). The average value might seem to be almost negligible & you might think all conjunctions would be similar, but that's not the case [2/n]
In addition, some #Starlink & #OneWeb satellites experience more conjunctions than others. Most satellites experience relatively few encounters but a few satellites are involved in a relatively large number (charts shows data for 7 days from 30 June 2022) [3/n] Chart showing the frequency that Starlink and OneWeb satelli

Welcome to my (delayed) monthly analysis of @CelesTrak #SOCRATES conjunctions. Since 1 March 2019, SOCRATES has predicted about 9 million unique conjunctions within 5 km involving active or derelict payloads. This is a thread focused on those involving #OneWeb & #Starlink [1/n] Chart showing the average daily number of conjunctions withi
#OneWeb payloads have accounted for ~500,000 unique conjunction predictions since 1 March 2019 (5.5% of all predictions made), while #Starlink payloads have accounted for ~1.1 million (12.5%) [2/n]
On 1 March 2019 #SOCRATES predicted ~3860 unique conjunctions within 5 km. On 30 June 2022 the corresponding number was ~10,160, an increase of ~160%. #Starlink accounted for ~2570 (25%) & #OneWeb accounted for ~1250 (12%) [3/n]

In advance of my monthly analysis of #Starlink conjunction data I wanted to share some additional analysis undertaken over the last few days. It's a work in progress but here's a thread looking a little deeper at the #SpaceX approach to #Starlink orbital space safety [1/n]
#SpaceX provided some relatively detailed information about its approach in a briefing to the #FCC (here:…) and in an update on the website (here:…) [2/n]
My focus has mostly been on understanding the implications relating to the choice of the probability threshold for collision avoidance manoeuvres. With the #SOCRATES #Starlink data now running across nearly 3 years we can gain some insights that may be useful [3/n]

Earlier this week Elon Musk set out his team's expectations for #Starlink satellites over the next 18 months. I thought I would use this month's #SOCRATES analysis to see what the Starlink team should expect in terms of conjunctions & manoeuvres over that period & beyond [1/n]
Before I start, I'd like to offer my thanks to @planet4589 for creating a page on his website with data that enabled me to move forwards with a critical part of the analysis. Thanks also go to @TSKelso for ongoing support and provision of SOCRATES data via @CelesTrak [2/n]
This month we open with the number of conjunctions within 5 km or less predicted for each week from December 2018 to the end of March 2022. Something extraordinary has happened because of #Starlink and the ASAT test in November: a 400% increase in less than 3 years [3/n]

#Socrates basically said this first. He called it "double ignorance" when someone doesn't even know that they don't know something. Double ignorance about the most important things in life was the main problem his philosophy sought to remedy, through the famous Socratic method.
Socrates said double ignorance requires a kind of intellectual arrogance or conceit, i.e., (mistakenly) believing that we know something which in fact we do not know. He thought it could best be exposed by certain questions that highlight gaps and contradictions in our thinking.
Normal ignorance is when you don't know what, e.g., "justice" means but recognize and admit your own ignorance, so want to learn.
Double ignorance is when you don't even realize that you're ignorant of the nature of justice but conceitedly assume that you're an expert.

It’s well known that our society is infected by concepts which make us unhappy, damage our communities and endanger the biological world. These concepts infect us, we become contagious, then we infect those around us.

We know the sort of concepts they are. They look like this:
–You need more
–Take, don’t give
–Winner takes all
–Greed is good
–Appearances matter
–Those in power deserve their power
–Those with wealth deserve their wealth
–It’s your fault you’re poor

Some of these concepts simply misinterpret Darwinism. Some are demographic falsehoods. Some are empirically false. All lead us to a dangerous outcome for our species.
I consider them viruses–contagious & malign concepts which are part of a mind plague that’s harming us all.

Let’s talk about the Socrates Bomb.
“That sounds unpleasant.”
More than unpleasant. It’s lethal.
“Is ‘lethal’ moral?”
It’s not lethal for people.
It’s lethal for lies.

The Socrates Bomb is an anti-propaganda incendiary device for use in cognitive conflict. It’s a frontline armament in our battle against the 21st Century pandemic of lies. It’s a cluster munition for deployment against disinformation and deceit.

As the Socrates Bomb explodes it shatters into fragments of different shapes and sizes. It’s shrapnel includes:
– The evidence shard
– The logic sliver
– The language splinter
– The motivation particle
– The morality needle

Here's a thread containing the slides and thoughts I shared at today's @seradata space conference. I wasn't able to invest much time to prepare the talk, so some of the slides will look familiar to those attending April's ESA #SpaceDebris conference. Some are new [1/n]
[alt text: talk title "The Space Debris Environment - Current Status and Evolution of the Risk"]
I put this slide together using data from It shows the historical evolution of the orbital object population (as recorded in the public catalogue). The highlight statistic is that active spacecraft make up 20% of the current catalogue population [2/n]

ImageImageImageImage

In the last #SOCRATES report of 2020 #Starlink satellites accounted for 29.1% (1-in-3.4) of all 44,530 close approaches < 5 km recorded for the first week of January 2021 with a total Pc of 1.7% #SpaceDebris
Ignoring Starlink-on-Starlink conjunctions the constellation satellites accounted for 9.8% of all close approaches < 5 km.
The yearly rates based on this report are 675,451 close approaches < 5 km involving #Starlink (227,655 ignoring Starlink-on-Starlink conjunctions)

Image

Another beautiful combination to read at once would be Lord #Buddha, #Socrates & #Confucius. It a great coincidence that such legends & monumental men lived in the same period in 3 of the most thriving ancient civilisations.
3 great philosophers, talking about their ideas about the ideal world.
It is amazing indeed to see that Greece which is considered as the birthplace of Democracy, had its most celebrated thinker oppose it all his life, his passionate disregard for it was eventually never bought.
It is though interesting to see that even though it was tried repeatedly, the most basic of Confucius’ ideas of family values, structure and kindship were not to be defeated, first by the monarchs & then by the Chinese nation & still lay at the very foundation of the country.

#Socrates said there are four reasons why the wise remain calm in the face of adversity. #Stoicism
1. They realize that things are often not as bad as they seem at first because life entails many reversals of fortune, given enough time.
2. They refuse to needlessly add another layer to their existing suffering by grieving about things and lamenting their misfortune on top of everything else.

A gentle reminder -

Democracy does not mean those in power have your best interests at heart. FFI.

All it means is that some random, mostly unscrupulous folks are in power because the mechanism that put them there is fueled by assorted bunch of degenerates, imbeciles & rascals
*FFI - Far From It
In case you think that proposition is outrageous, well, what was outrageous was #Socrates being sent to his death for holding pretty similar views, as did #Plato, and as have scores of other "thinking minds" ever since.

Democracy destroys through an excess of itself.

ImageImageImageImage
