Some thoughts on Labour's new amendment May's government is doing the negotiation, not Corbyn. Corbyn's job is to try and tie May's hand in those negotiations in a good way. 1/n
May and the Brexiters want the UK to be able to diverge from the EU in various ways. The CU amendment stops that happening for tariffs. This amendment tells May to aim to keep the same institutions, regulations, rights, standards and protections. 2/3
This is 'an' objective not 'the' objective, so hopefully right wing Labour MPs can vote for it, but nevertheless it cuts across everything that the Brexiters want to achieve. Smart? /end

Most of the UK media have called Hunt's speech 'punchy' or something like that We shouldn't have to wait for former civil servants to say what it really is: idiotic and dangerous. Idiotic because n EU tanks are about to enter London. Dangerous because 1/n
we are currently in negotiation with the EU, and we want them to do us a favour which they have no obligation to do: extend the backstop to the UK. A basic playground lesson is that if you want a bigger kid to do you a favour you do not start by insulting him. I understand 2/n
why he is saying this - to gain favour with Brexiter members - but it should be obvious to everyone that this is yet another example of putting personal ambition before the national interest. What will it take for someone in the media to suggest this possibility? /end

told that it’s good - advanced even - for our country to manufacture less and less and instead rely on cheap labour from abroad to produce imports, while we focus on the City of London and the finance sector. A lack of support for manufacturing is sucking the dynamism out 2/n
of our economy ..“ First point. This appears to be a standard critique of City dominance, and a laissez faire attitude to manufacturing. Not surprising given speaker + audience. Second point. Why the reference to 'cheap labour from abroad to produce'?? 3/n

The 2010 Coalition government, with strong help from the right wing press, promoted the idea that the most important thing a government should do to help the economy is reduce the deficit, even before the economy had recovered from the GFC. 1/n
Acting on that belief, voters elected a Conservative government in 2015. Does that make austerity the right thing to do? Of course it not. It made people poorer. 2/n

December first week marks completion of 16 years of my #entrepreneurial journey. I started my business at 22 with just a degree and no actual skill or experience for business. My 2 years of job experience were of beginners level & of not much help.

2/ To pick a concrete example: Many grassroots groups talk about taking money from things like the police training academy on the West Side, and putting that money in schools. Inevitably, someone will say, "That's not how it works!"
3/ And in a sense that person is right: There is no single budget where you can pick up money from the "police" category and put it in the "schools" category. CPS is a totally separate government from Chicago, with its own board that votes on its own budget.

It's been a long few days for Theresa May's tariffs policy. A little thread on how things have changed since Chequers...
The Chequers statement on Friday night made clear that - under the FCA - the UK would apply the UK's tariffs on imports destined for the UK and the EU's tariffs on imports destined for the EU. It was silent on what would happen to UK-bound imports coming in through the EU...
On Monday, Theresa May said the following, which is a bit vague, but could be read as signalling that the FCA would rely on reciprocity - i.e. the EU would apply UK tariffs on UK-bound goods...

1. Worst national leadership in my lifetime forcing through the most damaging, misguided & missold policy I can remember. Ideology & vested self interest replace statesmanship, soundbites replace sound judgement & autocracy subverts democracy.
#Brexit harms us irreparably #FBPE
2. A flawed Leave campaign based on lies, deceit, disingenuity & over simplification & a #Remain one fought w/o any positivity from the Govt & no real commitment from Labour, whose leader was virtually AWOL, did no justice to #Brexit complexity & betrayed our democratic process.
3. A mere 37% of voters/26.5% of the Ppl voted leave in a legally Non-Binding test of public opinion which has been corrupted, on the basis of an illegitimate political promise & interpreted as being the irrefutable Will of the Ppl.
The 1st is insufficient to claim the latter!
