Lenin was an agent of German imperialism sent to undermine the democratically elected socialist government of Kerensky and provoke the Western invasion of Russia to restore the Tsar.
Never change.
It's been a full 24 hours and this is still generating an outraged quote tweet fairly regularly. Thought this would flop to be honest, should've realised after April Fools Day that it wouldn't.
Conspiracy theories rely on some grain of truth. In this case Lenin really was allowed by Germany to return from exile in Switzerland on a train to Russia, they probably thought he might take Russia out of WWI, which if they did they were right. Does not make him a 'german agent'
You would find it extremely hard to find any anarchist or anti-state Marxist with anything good to say about Kerensky, or that would say the Russian Revolution in any way risked a return to Tsarism by going too far. This was taking the piss out of modern campist politics.
Yet someone like @BenjaminNorton will say publishing histories of the workers councils during Hungary '56 implies support for Imre Nagy or ex-WWII Hungarian military officers.
We got some push back for 'ironically repeating a fascist conspiracy theory'. The 'german agent' thing afaict was popularised by Churchill and gets everywhere from the Spectator to the NYT. It might be in bad taste, not sure there are good taste ways of dealing with conspiracism.
When people use arguments like 'this dude was an ex-Nazi' it may even be correct, but it doesn't necessarily reinforce their argument. In this case we can say that both the pro- and anti-reform factions of the Hungarian bureaucracy were not squeaky clean.

If you're basing your position on complex events with millions of people involved on what people say about a few people from one faction, then something is wrong.
