The UK is the only state in Europe which still has no time limit on how long it can imprison immigrants to remove them. Many are detained for years.

I have acted on both sides of legal challenges and can tell you the system promotes inertia and unfairness.
The Home Office staff are incredibly over-stretched and without a time limit the let things fester - it’s not because they’re evil, it’s because human nature.

That’s why a time limit makes sense even at a system level - promotes better and swifter decision-making. People shouldn’t be left to fester in prison (don’t let the ‘detention centre’ euphemism fool you - they are like prisons but without rehabilitation courses). It’s not right
