There's a few interesting points in this @HenryNewman piece for @ConHome on the latest developments in Brexit negotiations - with reflections on UK Gov, HMT, EU, next steps 1/ conservativehome.com/thecolumnists/…
I was drawn to this piece by the accusation that Treasury is inspiring business to speak out against the Government on Brexit. I think it's probably true. Though without consequences for negotiations as the EU knows the UK gov is split 2/
I shall steal a quote given to me by an anonymous business source "Business has no interest in project fear. Project fear is terrible for business. Making the UK economy look bad is terrible." 3/
Against this backdrop the article is right to point out the need for the Government to have a position. But given that there are at least three Brexit policies in the Cabinet (FTA as the EU is bluffing over the border, HMT / BEIS view, and fudge) don't hold your breath 4/
I'm hoping this bit about the EU approach is just here because you have to attack the EU first in an article for conservative party readers. I've noted Commission inflexibility, but this goes too far and is unhelpful - there is a good reason for their approach 5/
There's a lot of chatter around about the UK being in the single market for goods as a compromise Irish border solution. The difference between voluntary alignment, which is unlikely to prevent a border, and mandatory alignment, which might be on offer, is important 6/
A final point. The PM definitely should NOT request greater EU Member State involvement at this stage. Not before there is a potential solution which needs a final push. Only close work with the Commission can unlock the process at this point 7/ ends
