I've been seeing my #FBPE and FB Remain-y friends enthusiastically share an @Independent piece that says "EU negotiators will offer Brits an individual opt-in to remain EU citizens, chief negotiator confirms" with a pic of @guyverhofstadt. Alas it's from Dec 2016. 1/
We're now 1.5 years further and it's clear that my British friends in the UK and @BritishInEurope friends are set to lose massive rights. Their EU citizenship rights are stripped away (and of course also environmental protection, worker's rights etc.) 2/
Meanwhile the UK wants a bilateral deal with the US. With Trump - a great replacement for existing trade partners (ask China, or Canada how that worked out for them!) Of course the UK will have to decrease animal welfare and food standards (bring in the chlorinated chicken) 3/
Any EU protections that are still coming into force before the curtain falls on 29 March 2019, this government cynically appropriates as its own. Like this one

It still puzzles me that a non-binding referendum can result in such a massive loss of rights. A lot has focused on the @The3Million and @BritishInEurope but in purely numerical terms, Brits in UK represent the most massive, gigantic loss of rights in recent European history./end

Quite frankly I was disappointed at #PVOxford that enfranchising EU citizens was not even seen as a serious option.
From lazy scroungers and criminals, we've now become people who are tolerated bc they make contributions. We're paying guests. 1/
As long as #PeoplesVote does not enfranchise EU citizens in the UK, we risk becoming very much the topic of the vote (ending free movement still touted as a big win in the deal), not actually being able to influence the vote. 2/
Note that the franchise for the 2016 Referendum was decided under pressure of Brexiters - who rightly discerned EU citizens would vote Remain overwhelmingly. Cameron granted it because he would win anyway. 3/

A lot has been said on May's queue jumper comments and her non-apology, but one thing has not been looked at in detail, to my knowledge, namely how the UK government's stubborn refusal to understand or correctly represent freedom of movement infantilizes British citizens 1/
Freedom of movement is a reciprocal right that British citizens also enjoy, and that many have used to work, study, retire in the EU. It is not a special privilege EU citizens enjoy to jump any sort of queue (a queue I might add that May and her ilk have installed & tightened) 2/
For example, I have a very clever student, a British citizen without additional citizenship, who wants to do a master's, eventually a PhD and he's looking into programmes in the EU (e.g., Paris) for this. But I had to tell him, I have no idea how it will be with Brexit 3/

1/ the racist go home or face deportation vans she rolled out as Home Secretary.

I actually have his book on the desk behind me. Much like Machiavelli's The Prince, it's a manual on how to be a complete and utter bastard (and win). Many of the chapters point to why Leave won, others to why Remain lost. Based on its content, #FBPE need to get its hands dirty.
The article is very different, and it's Leavers that are the narcissists - they hold a belief in something and won't accept being called up on it, deny any facts they're shown as fake news and propaganda, while never questioning their own sources.
I have #FBPE in my bio, and it's because I value Freedom of Movement. I have benefited from it, as have my friends and family. I want to keep it, I want my fellow UK citizens to keep it, and I want EU residents in the UK to keep it too.

1/ Why is Brexit so complicated? A trade thread. (Warning: Long)

The trade details of Brexit are critical, but there's confusion about what's going on.

Since I'm followed by both @LeaveHQ folks and thanks to @mrjamesob, half of #FBPE, a maximally neutral explanation thread 👇🏻
2/ Post-Brexit, trade relations between the UK and the EU will fall on a spectrum which runs from complete separation (Hard Brexit: trading under only @WTO rules) on one end and remaining in the EU for trade purposes (Soft Brexit) on the other.
3/ What is that spectrum all about?

The closer the UK is to the 'only @WTO side', the more barriers it'll face in trading with the EU, both in goods like cars and services like accounting and finance, but the more trade policy and regulatory independence the UK will have.

a. The HoLs Constitution Committee stated the EUW Bill ‘risks fundamentally undermining legal certainty’. The statement echoes concerns that are reverberating through the UK legal system whilst being overlooked in the Brexit debate. Here are the issues:

b. The Committee’s view echoes mine: crucial sections of the Bill are ‘conceptually flawed’ & that ‘retained EU law’ should form part of an Act of Parliament on Brexit day in order to safeguard legal certainty.
c. There is an insidious fallacy from Brexiteers that we are returning sovereignty to Parliament and 'taking back control' of our laws. The harsh legal and constitutional reality of the Bill demonstrates this to be nothing but a fetish. We will be doing nothing of the sort. #FBR

Friends of ours voted Leave because they feel it would be good for this country if we could negotiate our own trade deals, so I want to spend a few thoughts on that here. 1/17
If you believe that we can negotiate great deals outside the EU ask yourself how we would achieve that.
It is not because we have better negotiators that the EU. The negotiators of the EU are the best of all countries, including the UK. 2/17
It is not that the EU is not targeting countries that we would. It is clear to everyone that the global market changes constantly and the EU, like Britain, identifies emerging economies to negotiate with. 3/17
