1/ the problem with hardcore Brexiteers is that they think either no brexit plan is needed or that a plan could be found easily but 'remainers' in the civil service and government don't want to find one.
2/ it ultimately boils down to a form of magical thinking - if we believe in brexit enough, they think; - we will get everything we want - full access to SM, no fees, ftas around the world and full control of immigration, frictionless borders and 100% sovereignty.
3/ but that's not realistic. Any relationship is based on give and take. Pros and cons.
4/ so how's about this? Let's leave the EU and go to a efta based brexit. We will be out of the EU. A few years down the line, if the public are unhappy with it, surely there will be a loud public call for a different form of brexit?
5/ by which point you can reveal your detailed 'cake and eat it' brexit plan.
6/ but if this public outcry never happens, we must then assume that the public are happy with efta/EEA? /End

1/ I'm more worried by the politics of #Brexit than the economics; the democracy-weakening torrent of lies, the rage against the rule of law over A50, the attacks on the civil service & electoral commission, the fascistic invocations of the "Will of the People" etc..

2/ As with Trump, the #Brexit right from the PM downwards is attacking the practices, rights and institutions that ground democracy - basic honesty, the right to oppose, legal checks on government, and the impartiality of the civil services & electoral commission.
3/ And one has to ask, is this just disorganised rage within a part of the political elite against anything seen as hindering #Brexit, which would be dangerous enough, or is its prevalence across the Atlantic a sign of a much more coordinated campaign to undermine democracy?

As talks get under way in Brussels today, the EU can:

a) attack - eviscerate Chequers for cherry picking

b) parry - play for time, probe UK real red lines

c) focus on what is deliverable to conclude Withdrawal Agreement in Autumn /2

It is the last of these where smart money lies. Chequers is dying anyway and is a 'future relationship issue'.

The focus is delivering a divorce treaty by 29.03.19 and for this most of work is done.

1. Starting to think the chances of a deal are closer to zero. There isn't enough coherence between the media, politicians, parties and policy wonks. they are all too easily distracted by trivia and Westminster sideshows.

2. The facts are that the EU has turned down any cake and eat it proposal on regulation and divergence and I find it is wise to take them at their word when they say no cherrypicking.
3. Loosely, the proposal from May is to leverage the NI solution into a while UK solution - which the EU has already declined. If anyone in government or close to it was paying attention they would have told May that the proposal is a stillborn.
