One of my great bugaboos about people on my side of the aisle who opposed and oppose Trump is that they don't just run into the people who sucked it up and voted Trump, their experience appears to be limited to the true believers.
A crapton of Republicans voted for anyone but Trump in the primaries and caucuses, held their nose for him in the general, and when confronted with his awfulness in office, looked and look at what the Democrats are saying and doing and reach for the clothespin again.
The polling is broadly reflective of this dynamic: Trump goes off the reservation, Republican opinion dips, Democrats respond and remind Republicans exactly who and what the Democrats are, Republican opinion recovers.
This is wildly unhealthy for everyone involved but Trump, but this is basically where we are. Barack Obama could have performed a 9th month partial birth abortion on the White House lawn and sacrificed the mortally wounded kid to Moloch and his survivors would have applauded.
Our politics has not yet reached a state of perfect tribalism, but it is heading there; and asserting that merely because one does not find the alternative wretched beyond belief, others should not as well, does not actually sway anyone.
