@flamesstamp @660NEWS Do we live in the United States? Are those numbers similar for Canada? (I have the figures)
@flamesstamp @660NEWS First, only 3% of violent crime in Canada involves a firearm. (I agree, that number should be zero). www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/85-005-…
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Second, Canada has much MUCH stricter gun control legislation than the United States. It’s not even apples to oranges. rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd…
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Third, a significant majority of crime guns used in Canada were not legally sourced. (Bill Blair, former Toronto chief of police and now quasi public safety minister cited at 70% of crime guns were illegally sourced from the US in Toronto under his tenure)
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Fourth, in data that I’ve seen, most “crime guns” seized by police are actually non-restricted weapons.
@flamesstamp @660NEWS I want firearms violence reduced to zero as much as you do. I’ve lived through a firearms related incidence of violence and no one should ever be subjected to it. So what’s the best way to stop it in Canada?
@flamesstamp @660NEWS First, we need to acknowledge that a significant majority of handgun related crimes were committed with illegally sourced weapons.
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Second, we need to acknowledge that we need better enforcement of smuggling laws on our US border, and put in place tools to do so. We also need stiffer penalties for the same.
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Third, I’d gladly welcome stronger enforcement of straw purchase laws, and stiffer penalties for the same. I think most legal firearms owners would feel the same way.
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Fourth, the Liberals need to appoint the backlog of judge vacancies that has grown under their watch. In Calgary, we saw an alleged gang leader with links to alleged firearms violence walk free because of the Jordan application.
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Fifth, the Liberals need to walk back the weakening of punishments for gang related offences that they’ve included in bill c75.
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Sixth, we need to ask ourselves if a handgun ban on legal sport shooters (that’s the only reason you’re allowed to have a handgun in Canada - you have to have a membership at a range), would cause criminals to turn in their illegal weapons. The answer is no.
@flamesstamp @660NEWS Seventh, since you’re a teacher and your bio says you’re interested in “real learning” for children, I’m always available to provide an alternative policy view to yours to your class. My best - M
