There are many namesake four-lane 'highways' in #Coimbatore including the one where seven innocent lives are lost by an irresponsible scoundrel today. These roads have only one drivable lane in each way, effectively making these two-lane highways. 1/5
There is no shoulder or service lane in any of these 'highways'. There are no 'stop-lanes' for buses. Buses stop right on the left lane. Private bus operators are privileged (keeping officials on maamool) and at times even occupy both lanes during stop. 2/5
Lack of dedicated stop locations for autorickshaws/share-autos/minibuses let them encroach upon the driving lane while being parked. No proper bus shelters, hence people stand on the road. Add chaotic maamool paying petty shops to this & you get a classic recipe for disaster. 3/5
Police are notoriously hesitant in punishing anyone driving fancy cars here. Reckless driving goes unpunished while simple people are charged for helmet, seat belt, papers, etc. Even for missing black dot on the headlamp! 4/5
Unless an integrated scientific road development with matching enforcement is carried out, there will be no improvement. Knee jerk reaction like erecting a big 'speed breaker' is not the permanent solution. 5/5
