THREAD // Masculinity, Tribes and Success

I'm almost halfway through reading Becoming a Barbarian

Read The Warrior Ethos and The Way of Men first since they flow nicely together
This is not a summary

Just some quotes and observations that have stood out so far

1) What does it mean to be masculine?

"Understanding masculinity means understanding that men can only reach their greatest potential through vital CONFLICT and COMPETITION with other men."
If your life isn't where you want it to be...

If you're underachieving...

- Are you avoiding conflict?
- Are you avoiding competition?

We're wired to avoid suffering, but it's through that suffering that we grow

You must "go through the fire" - OFTEN - to reach rewards
2) Men must build tribes

"These alliances bring a sense of order and direction to chaos and disorientation" and ".. are the root of our collective identity."

Society has reduced us to nothing more than data points focused on constant consumption
The solution is to build tribes of people with shared values, purpose and identity

You can take this very literally, but remember that you can pick and choose your online tribes.. and meet them in person (as I have with @MyLatinLife @NomadicHustler and others)
3) Who do you speak for?

The last point I'll share is about who you care about

We've been conditioned to worry about so many things outside our control

People on the other side of the world

Complete strangers

And it's silly
The best thing we can do is care about a small number of people (our tribe), deeply and sincerely

This will sound callous to some people, but it's realistic and genuine

Our capacity to care is limited (see Dunbar's # of 150), so by focusing on a few we can have a greater impact
