No act of Congress has ever granted confederate traitors the status of United States veterans.

The law in 1957 allowed for pensions to be paid to confederate widows- I’d be interested to see how many, if any, were alive to collect. The 1929 law simply provides grave markers.
Both were symbolic gestures to appease the southerners clinging to the lost cause ideology: the myth that secession was patriotic, and heroic, and not at all about slavery.

We continue to pay the price for the shortcuts America took on the path to reunification.
We continue to make the same mistakes today. Like when we roll our eyes at another racist comment from that one coworker instead of speaking up, because it’s easier to avoid the conflict. Our silence affirms their personal narrative, whether we intend it to or not.
When I worked HR, I tried to explain that cutting corners was expensive af. You save a little money now by adjusting the time clock so your employees don’t hit overtime. But you’re gonna pay ten times as much in the lawsuit.

Pay up now. It’s cheaper. And the right thing to do.
I got a hefty check from the class action against that employer. Cause no matter how much you try to warn them, people always wanna take the easy way out. It’s short-sighted, it’s irresponsible, it’s a total Trump move.

Pay the piper when the bill is due. The interest is brutal.
Remember that when shit feels hard.

Just do the work.

Do it now, because the interest is always compounded.

do. the. work.
