More than 750 faith-based organizations and national and local leaders signed on to a letter today asking President Trump and Members of Congress to commit to resettling at least 75,000 refugees in the coming fiscal year, which starts in October. greateras1.org/more-than-720-…
Signers include Bethany Christian Services, Church World Service, HIAS, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, the Episcopal Church, World Relief and at least one Catholic Charities office.
I recently wrote about how those agencies, normally tasked with welcoming refugees, got involved in the crisis at the border. religionnews.com/2018/08/15/fai…
And earlier this year, @jackmjenkins and I wrote about how the faith-based agencies that resettle refugees in the U.S. have been decimated by Trump administration policies. They make up 6 of the 9 agencies contracted with the government to do that work. religionnews.com/2018/02/16/fai…
More signers on this letter include some of the 10 largest Protestant denominations in the U.S.: United Methodist Church, American Baptist Churches, ELCA, PCUSA, Episcopal Church.

Also, faith groups like AJC, Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and Islamic Relief USA.
It comes two weeks after the Evangelical Immigration Table also published a letter to Trump administration officials asking them to raise the refugee ceiling for the coming fiscal year to 75,000. evangelicalimmigrationtable.com/citing-religio…
That coalition includes the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S.
Some numbers:

Obama set the refugee ceiling at 110,000 his last year in office.

Trump lowered that to 45,000 his first year in office.

The U.S. is on track to admit a fraction of that number. Since last October, it has received 18,907 refugees. rcusa.org
.@nytimes has reported Trump is considering lowering that number to 25,000 for the fiscal year that begins in October. nytimes.com/2018/08/01/us/…
